Re: "Old Lady/Man" Names

  • These are some great names! I wish I'd caught your earlier post. Keep them coming as you get new players. Also, good for you for volunteering at the community center!

  • Interesting post!

    Ladies:
Rita- meh, not a fan.at.all as a formal name, it's ok as a nn.  I don't think it's one of the names that have made the cross over.

    Julia- So classic!

Alice- I'm really liking this these days, especially over the more modern Alicia and Allison.

Toby (We actually have two of these)- So odd that there's 2.  I definitely think it's a boy name.

Suzette- cute!  I can't convince DH of this though he's much more ok with Susanna.

Iris- of all the flower names, this is my favorite.  Violet is a close second.

Barbara- I feel like this name is so dated.

Roxanne- I've never met a young Roxanne, so I don't know how I feel about it on a baby or child.

    Camille- Nice!

Aldeen- Hmm  The boy name Alden with an extra "e" thrown in?  Never seen this one for before!

Gentlemen (There aren't as many men):

    Robert

    John

    Wayne

    Leon

They're all so very classic.  Though I think Leonardo is what most people would go with these days and I don't see Wayne becoming really popular.  Around here it and it's sound cousin Duane or Dwayne are popular middle names for those born between 1960-1980.

Coming out of lurking...I know someone who has a four year old named Roxanne and they call her Roxie.  I'm not a fan of Roxanne, but Roxie is a cute nn for it.

  • I really like Iris, Roxanne and Camille, but am not a huge fan of the others. That's interesting that there are two women named Toby! I wonder if it is short for something?
  • I think Julia is pretty, too. Somehow I missed that one when I first read the post.
  • I love them all! Especially since they don't scream out "old person" like a lot of popular older names do.

    Such a nice list!

Love Rita, Julia, Alice, Iris, Camille, Robert, John, and Leon!

Those are my favorites too!  Also, Alice the person is so sweet that it's making me love the name even more.  I'm trying to convince DH that we should use Alice instead of Abigail for our phantom future daughter, though I think I'm losing the fight.

  • I REALLY like Iris, never heard it before your post. DH and I are struggling on possible girl names. :)

We are actually using Wayne as a MN, its my FIL first name. So its more of a family purpose, but aside from that I still really like it!

I'm not sure if Toby is short for anything for either of them.  I will have to ask the next time I see them.

I'm not sure, I'd never heard it before either.  It's pronounced like All-dean or some people say it more like Al (like you can call me Al)-dean.  Maybe I'm spelling it wrong, but like I said, I've never seen it before either.
