if you used nipple shields...

At what age did you find that your LO no longer needed the nipple shield? Should I be aiming towards my due date (July 22)? I cannot begin to express how much I hate those nipple shields...they SOAK my girls and I really think they aren't getting enough at the breast because of the shields. Sometimes they are hungry again only 15-30 minutes after nursing, and that never happens when I give them milk in a bottle.

  • I tried to start weaning L once she hit her due date, but she kept resisting, so I would wait and try again later...it wasn't until she was 3.5 adjusted when she kicked it on her own. GL!

  • DS was a late weaner, but didn't drop them until ~8 months.  They should be able to get enough milk with the shield, but it's very common for infants to want to nurse more frequently than they take the bottle since there's a lot more comfort involved and in many ways it's more work for them.  After 15-30 minutes is pretty frequent, but not unheard of.  How is it when you measure feedings from the start of the 1st feeding to the start of the 2nd?  DS would go 2-3 hours most of the time after we transitioned fully to BFing, but he'd usually have 2-3 feedings a day where he'd only go 1-1.5 hours...and given that he'd usually nurse for 20-45 minutes, that didn't leave a lot of time in between!
  • We were able to wean off of the nipple shield around his due date (just clicked one day!), but like PP said, there are still times when he wants to eat very frequently and/or nurse for a long time.
