Anyone own a Kinect?

My husband is thinking of getting one for his Xbox 360, and thought we could get some exercise games and try getting some activity in that way.  If you have one, any pros/cons?  Do you exercise with it, and how do you like that?  Any particular games you recommend?

  • We have one.  It's fun.  It works really well to recognize your body and what you're doing.  You do need room for it though.  I think you need like 8 feet in front of your tv?  Look it up to see.  So we have to move our coffee table out of the way to use it.  I haven't used it for exercise but I assume it would be just as good as watching an aerobics video.

  • Yes we have one I like the Kinect adventures, its a game but you get a pretty good work out from it. I also have kinect sports and that is fun too.  Cruz loves kinectamles.  One downfall is that if someone else is moving in the room it will track them too but there is a new release that just happened that resolves that a lot.  They are also working on getting the tracking area to be more precise and in a smaller area.  I don't know when this is available to the public but we have the beta right now and it works much better.

  • I brought one for my DH for his birthday 3 months ago & he absolutely loves it! He even asked about the exercise games and WANTS to do them - weird from him! We play it together alot and it does work up a sweat. As Jill said you do need space for it though - we have to move our sofa out of the way but it's not too bad!

You will love it just as much as your DH will I am sure!

  • we have one and LOVE it!  we also have the adventures, and the sports game with bowling & tennis.  it's fun to have it for my DH &  I to play together @home. I also have the dance one, that my girlfriends and I will play. (lol DH won't play that one with me) ;) Yes, like other's have said just make sure you have the space, or it won't be much fun running into the couch. lol.
  • Disclamer - I work for Microsoft. :)

We've had a Kinect for a little over a year now and love it. I have an exercise game, but like Dance Central for workout instead (I suck at dancing, but man, that's an awesome game!). Most any Kinect game will give you some sort of workout, since you are up off your butt and moving around.

I highly recommend Kinect Sports (and Kinect Sports Season Two is coming soon as well), I never thought playing table tennis could be so fun, and my DD loves playing soccer on it.

If your hubby is a hardcore gamer he *might* not like it as much, but I'm much more of a gamer than my hubby is and I play both with and without the Kinect.

One of the nice things with it is we can use Video Kinect to video chat with our parents all the way in NC - and they can see their granddaughter, and soon, their grandson! We got them a Kinect too, but if the other party doesn't have one, they can just use Windows Live Messenger, and a webcam and it still works.

For space, I highly recommend mounting the Kinect above your TV - somewhere around the 5-6 foot range. With it up higher, you don't need to clear out quite as much space. We have our TV mounted on the wall, and just have the Kinect sitting on top of that. There's lots of 3rd party hardware available to do a simple mount to wall, or shelf for TV.

Let me know if you have any questions! I'd be happy to answer what I can.
