Preemies

anyone? prilosec not work or stop working?!

ugh Elliott is such a mess.  It seems like we change something and he seems better, and then things get just as bad.

He is such a fuss about eating.  We know he either must have colic, reflux, or I suspect some of both.

He's been fussing at every feeding today.  That's why i suspect more than just colic.

Currently he is on Nutramigen and on a LOT of Prilosec.  We just upped his Prilosec to a very high dose for his weight and he seemed so much better for a coupel of days and BAM today he's been so terrible.  Crying at feeding and after.

Is it possible for Prilosec to temporarily work and then just stop?!!?

Can colic be associated with feedings?

HELP!  I am so confused and lost.  Andrew had terrible reflux but Prilosec did work (as long as dose appropriate for his weight) and I never wanted to go through this again.  It is much harder when you also have a toddler to take care of (one with a lot of needs, too).

UGHHGHGHGGHGH

Re: anyone? prilosec not work or stop working?!

  • I could've written this post myself. DS has all of a sudden massively regressed with his reflux. He's miserable, I'm miserable and I'm doing laundry every 2 hours because he spits up on everything all.day.long. I called the pedi to see if we needed to adjust the prilosec (also on nutramigen) but because DS is already on the highest high of the dose for his weight, we can't :( They pretty much told me I just have to wait until he outgrows it. I cried. It's awful. I have noticed though that he doesn't spit up solids, so I'm hopeful that once we get more into solids, that will help. I feel your pain :(

  • I think I might ask to switch to Prevacid? What do we have to lose at this point :(:(

    this *** sucks

  • I AM SO GLAD THAT YOU BOTH WROTE THIS! I could have ALSO written this myself. LO (9lbs 15oz) is on Alimentum, .45ml Zantac/ 3x day, 1.5ml Prilosec/ 2x day, Maalox as needed, thickened feeds (alternating rice and oats), and is always always always propped upright. I still have to do laundry every single day. He still screams and cries through 60% or more feeds. He only takes 2-3 oz per feed at 5 months act (2 months adj) which means we are still eating every 2-3 hours. Although... he has been sleeping through the night the past 3 days!

I also feel like once things change, LO is good for a week or so and then it all goes downhill again. I don't know what it is. We see a GI specialist and when I met him for the first time a month ago he was concerned that LO was on so much meds and was still struggling. He thought that maybe, just maybe, there was something else going on. I see him again in 2 weeks and hopefully, we will be able to figure something else out. I was also thinking about Prevacid... but I feel like it will just be like everything else... good for a week... and then back to crap. :(

I am so sorry that you both are dealing with the same thing. I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy. Haven't we been through enough with our preemies???

  • Check out the message boards at https://www.infantreflux.org/. The moms there have so much experience and are extremely helpful in this area (not that the bump moms aren't great too!).

Also, I highly recommend MARCI Kids - https://www.marci-kids.com/.  A lot of infants are under-medicated for reflux.  MARCI kids has parent information and pediatrician information and many doctors will up the dosage after reading materials from them.

    Good luck!!

  • that happened to us and our GI switched us to previcid and it seemed to have done the trick -- thank God! i feel your pain.

Thanks! Very interesting.  I always heard that 2 mg per kg per day was the limit for Prilosec!  He is on 1.5 mg per kg per day but no improvement - we see improvement when we increase it (we just went from 1 to 1.5) but only temporarily so i feel like going up to 2 isn't going to matter!

I'm calling the doctors soon to see what they suggest.

  • Our GI dr told me Prilosec is no good after 3 weeks because of the way it is compounded. We had been doing great on it & then it was like LO was drinking acid. Dr said the med wasn't effective anymore. He re-wrote the rx to have it refilled every three weeks. So far so good.

We switched Kevin off Zantac to Prilosec a few weeks ago and it was a disaster.

Five days of a miserable baby and diarrhea - while we were on vacation - not fun!  I called his GI and switched him back to Zantac but at a higher dose.  He's also on Bethanechol to help with gastric emptying.

Friends with a reflux infant were visiting this past weekend and their baby is doing very well on Prevacid.  I may ask the GI to try it if the Zantac stops working.

  • The prilosec was working for the past 2 weeks, but the past 2-3 days LO has been spitting up A LOT and fussier than normal. We are going back to the pedi on Monday and I hope he changes something (he is also on .3ML zantac 3x daily). I think his formula needs to change (currently on enfacare)
