s/o of RE's

I'm dealing with issues TTC & PCOS......at what point did you decide to see an RE? I'm currently working with my ob/gyn and just wondering if I should make the leap to an RE....

Thanks!

Re: s/o of RE's

  • I TTC for a year before I jumped over to an RE because I didn't know I had PCOS. I was also 34 and in hindsight I could have gone to one sooner.

Dx: PCOS and short luteal phase
18 cycles (3 with our RE) - Metformin + Clomid + HCG booster did the trick!
    BFP #1 6/22/09 EDD: 3/2/10 DS born: 3/8/10

    TTC #2 since Dec 2011
    BFP #2 7/8/12 EDD: 3/18/12 M/C @ 9w1d: 8/16/12

  • It depends. Some people with PCOS don't have much trouble, some do. It also depends on your age. Generally speaking, under 35 it's a year, over 35 it's 6 months.

What is your OB doing to help with your PCOS?

I ended up doing clomid with my OB after 8 months when I was 34 because my cycles went all wonky after I m/c (I'm PCOish, but not necessarily PCOS.)

It took another year for me to see the RE, mostly because I was unemployed... and 4 cycles of clomid didn't work.

  • We saw the OB after about 6 months and quickly switched to an RE for initial testing.  I didn't feel like wasting any time getting some initial testing when it hadn't happened yet.  We waited to start any treatments after a year of TTC when the initial testing didn't show anything too worrisome.  I didn't have a good experience with the OB talking about possible infertility and will never go to one again if we end up facing infertility again.
After 2 years and 6 IUIs, we did it with IVF w/ ICSI!

  • I charted for a few months, knew that I didn't ovulate, and made an appt with the RE after 2 months on Clomid with my gyno. The ob/gyn's plan of attack was 6 cycles on Clomid with a day 14 u/s each cycle, and then a referral to the house RE after 6  months.

An RE is more in the business of making babies than an ob/gyn.

I charted for 6 months, then went to an OB who claimed that she could help me.  Turns out she didn't know squat!  After 2 HSGs, 2 rounds of Clomid, and about 6 wasted cycles I made an appointment with a RE (but it took me about 3 months to get an appointment).

Re had me PG in 3 months.  I wish I didn't waste me time and $ with an OB.

  • I also have PCOS and I knew pretty quickly there was a problem.  I never ovulate and don't get AF without taking meds for it.  I asked my OB at my yearly after about 6 months off BCP.  Initially, I thought I was jumping the gun a little but I'm now at almost 18 months of TTC and still not KU.

You can always go to the appt and see what they say.  You don't have to jump into treatment immediately.

ETA:  Also, if you are looking for support the Trouble TTC and the IF board are great!

  • I went after 6 months but I had been off the pill for 3 years. I knew I had a problem from the get go because I was charting and I had a day long period. However finding someone to listen to me was ridiculous because they all thought I was young and hadn't been trying that long and had everything in my favor except the fact I had a one day period.

  • Thanks everyone. Quizzle, to answer your question, I'm on my first cycle of clomid. We started TTC last Fall....got off of the pill, had a few regular cycles, before they disappeared all together. I finally got diagnosed with PCOS in April. We had zero problems when I conceived my DD so this was all pretty surprising to me.....

  • I charted and knew I ovulated, but the RE wouldn't listen to me and prescribed my clomid on my first visit (I never took it). She also ran all these other test during the wrong cycle time (she was going off a 28 day cycle when I'm a 38-40 day cycle).  So the test results would come back that I wasn't ovulating, didn't have enough Progesterone, etc..  However, I felt it was all inaccurate because some of these test have to be done pretty timely per when you're either about to ovulate or right after you ovulate.

So I stopped seeing her.  My OB was totally on board with running all the test from what my chart reflected and really listened to me.  We had a game plan but fortunately, we didn't have to use it because I got pregnant that cycle.

I think charting is the key to PCOS initially.  After getting to know your cycle and your body after a few months, you can try to figure if you need to see a RE or not (i.e. you're not evaluating or your cycles are all over the place).

Thanks!  I've taken breaks from treatment along the way.  You just need to go at your own pace.  I do suggest going to an RE.  I have a great OB that "specilizes" in IF.  Although I love her to pieces she couldn't really help.
