Private insurance for LO?

DH just got his insurance update and it'll cost $188/mo to add LO to his insurance, but the last time I got a private quote it was $125/mo. Is anyone planning on doing this? I only did BCBS, but I know I need to do quotes through Aetna and I'm drawing a blank on other providers.

Advice?

Re: Private insurance for LO?

  • LO is going to go on DH's when he/she is born and I will be on his at the start of the new year.  He works for a global company, so he has excellent benefits.  It's so much cheaper if we are all on one plan.

What you need to think about is if you have a separate policy for LO, that's another deductible and out of pocket max you'd have to meet for the year.  May be worth the cost to keep LO on one of your plans.

I didn't think about that. It's so unpredictable w/ sick baby visits now that well baby visits are covered 100%.

I agree with this. Also, you should carefully look at the benefits structure of the private plan. There is probably a reason it is cheaper. Group plans are generally much more comprehensive.

  • DH and I did a lot of research on this before we got pregnant. I ended up dropping my insurance and DH added me to his. We've had to pay the "family plan" price (which is about $100 more a month than us having separate plans) but the benefits of only one deductible has been pretty nice. The other benefit is that when LO is here we can add him/her for no additional monthly cost. It felt like we were spending extra money by doing this, but it will end up being a savings.

It will also be nice to have our L&D costs be on this year's billing. Sweeet to have the deductible taken care of.

  • Our LO will either ride on my insurance or DH's. Waiting to find out how much it will cost to add to either one and go with whichever is less out of pocket. I think to add to mine it's $250/month - but it might be per quarter. I haven't looked into it lately.
  • unless our LO has medical issues after birth we will be doing private insurance.  my husband is a pastor and we get a stipend for insurance so thats what he and DD have.  my employer has EXCELLENT insurance but i only work part time and to add my family its outrageous.  we've had luck with zanderinsurance.com....they'll give you a variety of rates and deductibles to choose from.  good luck!

  • thanks to healthcare reform, we are down to BCBS. they are the only company that will offer a plan to an infant only.
