Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Sleeping with Blankets

DS has a security blanket that he was sleeping with but someone who was watching him misplaced it. It was a gift and the person who got it for him doesn't remember where she got it from.

He has not been sleeping well the past few nights so I tried giving him one of his baby blankets that is made of a similar satin-like material. He slept so much better but I worry about him sleeping with a full size baby blanket especially since he likes to cover his face partially. It's pretty light weight but I still worry.

At what point did you/will you allow LO to sleep with a blanket? I am tempted to allow him to sleep with this blanket because he sleeps so much better but I wanted to hear from other moms before I make my decision.

Re: Sleeping with Blankets

  • E sleeps on her stomach and doesn't move much. I drape one over her legs when she's in light jammies.

  • I leave a little lovey blanket with DS every night and at naptime...we have 3-4 so if one gets lost it's no big deal. I have let him nap with a light blanket over him occasionally and I don't think it's as much of an issue once they're >6 months and able to roll over easily. I'm a little wary of leaving him with one all night long but once it starts getting cooler out I will probably put a light blanket over his legs at night.

He's growing up, but he'll always be my baby!

  • ps If he's only using the blanket for comfort, what about giving him a little burp rag to sleep with instead?

I tried giving him something else but the fabric was different so it didn't work. He seems to like the soft satin feel. I think I might just have to go find a new security blanket. I am too paranoid to let him sleep with a big blanket all night. Thanks.

  • I will use a blanket if she's napping but like pp I am wary of letting her use one over night so I typically use the sleep sacks and she seems to like them. If you think the blanket is to big, why don't you cut a square off to give to him and just sew the cut parts up so there is no strings hanging off.

  • Hazel sleeps with a blanket, but it's crocheted and has holes all over it. She's slept with one without holes before, but it freaks me out and I have to check on her every 2.5 seconds.

  • Ever since he started sleeping in his crib at 4 months. He was rolling around so much and sleeping on his tummy anyway (all SIDS no-nos), and would push the blankie around his legs and it kept him from rolling as much.

  • I let Jay fall asleep with a blanket but as soon as he is asleep I go and take it from him. My daycare told me that they were not allowed to let him sleep with anythin untill he is a year.
  • DS has an aden + anais security blanket (with the satin edges) and a lion lovey with the satin on it that he sleeps with, though I think he could care less about them. If he likes the feel of the satin, what about one of those? They're both lightweight and he's not likely to cover his face with them...even if he did, the aden + anais is very light and breathable.

  • I'm obviously in the minority. DS sleeps better when we give him a blanket to hold onto so we started letting him sleep with one. We started giving him the full-size fleecy baby blankets b/c we got so many at our shower. Usually he just holds the blanket and wraps his arms & legs around it.

Our pedi did tell us that once babies can roll around & move on their own in the crib, the chance for suffocation from bumpers/blankets/etc is really reduced. DS rolls both ways & scoots around in his crib, so I see no reason not to give him a blanket if he sleeps better that way.
  • Our LOs are similar age...DD has been sleeping with the following in her bed since about 6 months old, or when she could roll back to front and front to back:

    Regular crib bumpers

    Knitted or Crocheted baby blanket

    Fleece taggy blanket

"Ellie" her small stuffed elephant with teethers for hands and feet

I will often find her with the afghan blanket snuggled up against her face, or she will sleep with her head smooshed in the corner against the bumpers, and I don't worry because she is able to move away and pull the blankets.  If I ever see it over her head, I will move it though.  I think at this point, you are ok putting your LO down with a blanket.  HTH!

  • Both kids sleep in sleep sacks, so they can't pull them over their heads. We also started giving DD a blanket as well at about 17 months old.

  • Mollusk sleeps on her tummy, if she seems cool I'll drape a light blanket over her legs.  She usually just kicks it off.
