Hazel and Maybel/Mabel
Hi I'm new on the TTC board and love reading the baby name board.
Just wondering thoughts on these two. It surprises me that these aren't more popular with the old fashioned name trend.
After Julia Roberts used the name Hazel I thought it would become more popular, it describes a pretty color, it has a z in it (which always seems to be poplular), and its feminine (meaning you would only use it for a girl). It all seems like ingredients for a popular name....
And Maybel/Mabel has a pretty sound to it IMO.
Your thoughts?
Edit: you guys are right about the spelling, it is more commonly spelled Mabel. I know an older lady with the name Maybel and I really wasn't thinking about spelling when I posted.

I'm not sure who spells is Maybel but Mabel and Hazel are NMS. They are past the point of granny-chic, IMO.

I really don't like the spelling of Maybel. I dislike Hazel, but it's a real name. I would not personally choose either.
My Grandmother was Hazel, I liked it on her but I think of it as old.
When I was in the hospital with a stroke, before I was put in a private room because I was young and needed my family with me more, the lady beside me was named Maybel. She was really old so it is another old name for me. I think about her still and wonder what happened to her.
I could see Maybel fit in better with modern trends than Hazel, it has the may sound and the bell sound which seems to be popular now.
I've seen Mabel spelled both ways. I guess they both have too strong connotations with old people!
We are not considering them but I don't think they are awful.

I don't really like Maybel at all...something about it....sounds like a dog's name or something to me. I really love Hazel, and it was on my list of girl names until I found out I was having a boy. BUT, it just didn't seem to flow well with any other names, so ultimately it got vetoed from my list. I have a high school friend on FB who names her daughter Hazel and I just loved it for how uncommon and pretty it is.

I love both names. My husband doesn't think Mabel works with our LN, otherwise it would be right at the top of our list. I'm not convinced that it doesn't work, so I think we'll have to revisit the name when we get pregnant.
I think Hazel is also lovely. I think that in 5-10 years, both names will become a lot more popular. A lot of people still have the 'old lady' connotation, but I'm guessing that will change soon and they'll become fresh again.

I like them both HOWEVER...a word of caution.
When I was about 9, there was a girl named Hazel who was frequently at the city pool but she went to another school, so she was sort of an enigma and we were all fascinated by her. My friend thought her name was A-hole for a long time, and one day she finally asked me "Why do they call her A-hole?"
Later on in life, I was watching Mad About You and they named their baby Mabel. My brother was absolutely disgusted and said "Who named a kid A-hole?"
So, I don't know...a few people might think you named your kid A-hole.

obviously, I love Hazel! Mabel is okay.
Hazel has been moving up for years, just not as quickly as some other names. Top 300 is definitely not rare. I love Hazel and even though I scoffed at Mabel a year ago, it's beginning to grow on me [though I wouldn't personally use it]. I think it's about 10 years behind Hazel and in 2015, they'll both seem less grannyish than they do now.
Just curious, is your son's name Heny or Henry? I don't know that I would lock myself into only H names [with Hazel] but I like Hazel the best.
I actually like both names (with traditional spellings). Before we found out we were having b/g twins I toyed with the names Mamie and Mabel for g/g. They got awful reactions (from my hubby too), but I liked them.
I saw go with what you like. They do sound sort of "old lady" so I get why people don't dig them all that much.

honestly, i wonder why they aren't more popular. for ex, mabel and isabelle sound similar to me...isabelle is so popular. hazel and mabel are both really cute with your son's name. if you love them and they fit your style, go for it!
i've only been reading this board for a month or so & it seems like only very popular or traditional names get consistent positive feedback, fyi.
This. I like Hazel more than Mabel, maybe because Mabel makes me think of Mayberry or some other little town. Names like Lola, Aleta, Eloise, Alice, ect. were considered by most people 'old lady names' until recently. As names like Mabel become less common for grandmothers we will probably see them reappear.
