September Mamas and Paris (posted under wrong message board--please ignore)

SO and I are going on our baby-moon to Paris tomorrow, and we're so excited! It's the first time either of us have traveled to Europe or taken a real vacation with each other (you know, aside from visiting family). So, after some number-crunching, getting the okay from my midwife, and making sure my 3rd trimester body is up for the task, we are ready for France. We plan on seeing the Louvre, the Catacombes, Sacre Couer, and Moulin de la Galette--everything else is up for grabs.

Does anyone have any recommendations or advice for Paris? What to avoid, what to see/do, pointers to avoid French culture faux pas'? I would truly appreciate any information anyone has to offer about personal or second-hand Parisian experiences.

Merci beacoup tout le monde!

  • I would try to get to southern France if you can, beautiful country in the summer time, the french alps...ah, so incredible.

Paris gets a lot of tourists, and I found that when we went places in France that they seemed friendlier if we asked them if we could speak English to them before starting a conversation even though most of them know a bit of English.

Also, I noticed that when we ate out the waiter or waitress does not make small talk and most of them didn't like small talk. Just my experience. Have fun!

  • We went to Paris for our 'babymoon' back in April as well!  We took our 3 year old and it was more for our 5 year wedding anniversary then a babymoon, so the trip might be different then what you are looking for.

Paris is AMAZING.  The louvre was great--I could have spent a week there (we only did two days).  I HIGHLY recommend getting advanced passes for the eiffle tower for first thing in the morning or later in the evening (depending on if you want to see it at night or day).  The eiffle tower lines were AWFUL.

I also highly recommend the hop on-hop off tour.  We did the two day and really  needed it (there are 4 lines and we got to do everything).  We didn't stop at the Louvre though, we went back there because we knew we needed a few days.

We didn't have enough time, but I hear that the day trip to Versaillee or Normandy is amazing.  Also, if you have the time I really highly recommend hopping on a train (Thalys is great) and doing a day trip to Bruge in Belgium.  You can get there from Paris through Brussels.  That was just as beautiful as Paris, but a lot smaller.

  • Also...I found that being 6 months pregnant and having a toddler, EVERYONE was friendly.  We also went to Brussels and I found people to be RUDE there.

  • I have no advice as I've never been off the East coast of the US. But I will tell you that I am so incredibly jealous (Europe--aside from Italy--is not somewhere DH wants to go.) Our baby moon is a weekend trip to a small town near a beach about 2 hours away from home. We're going in two weeks fro a Friday night thru Sunday afternoon weekend and I'm excited enough about that lol. Hope you guys have a great time!!!!
