Anyone have luck changing a flight and not getting charged?

We have to catch an earlier flight (one day before departure) to attend a funeral and we were quoted $700 in fees to do so.  This is totally ridiculous.  I'm going to call again but does anyone have any tips?  I know we will have to pay something but $700 is highway robbery.

  • Did you tell them it's for a funeral?  Usually they are able to give you a lower rate when you say that.

  • Which airline?

I'd ask to speak with a manager, definitely mention the funeral and be as nice as you possibly can.

    $700 is ridiculous!

  • I have not but how many tickets is that for?  I have gotten fees reduced.  We fly United and have a United credit card (we do fly other airlines sometimes but shhh don't tell unitedWink).  I used those two things a loyalty leverage to get the transfer fees reduced.  There are two main things to remember 1. airlines are broke and want to make money anyway they can, and 2. If you are loyal to an airline they do NOT want to lose you as a customer.

My advice would be 1. make sure you talk to someone who had the authority to make changes, do not waste your time talking with someone in Bangalore who is totally uncapable of anything but following their script and 2. if in the end you have to pay the fees, see if they will bump you to business or first class for the trouble.  It would still suck having to pay the fees but it might sting less if you do so from first class.

  • Did you mention it was a funeral?  Are you a member of that airline's frequent flier program?

I have been able to do it before but as PP mentioned I'm a member of their frequent flier program and have a credit card of that airline.  Those two things allowed me to pay a significantly reduced fee.

  • I haven't had luck with that but wanted to say I'm sorry for your families loss T.
