First of all, please excuse the fact that my screenname says I've only posted once or twice, I used to have a different name for The Nest, but the password that was saved in my old computer is gone...and I've forgotten the username...and I no longer have the email account that I used to set it up 5 years ago. Oops!
And second, I know this question gets asked ALL the time, but I thought I'd give it a shot myself!
I've already been trolling DCUrbanMom for ideas, but wanted to see where (besides on there) you found your nanny share or in-home daycare. We're located in Fairfax County (22032 zip) and are looking for care in January 2012. We found out that we most likely will not be getting into the center at my husband's work that we applied for in January 2011 -- they generally fill spots in Septembers, based off of the county's fiscal eyar -- so we are getting really anxious about lining up an alternative for our newborn in January.
I've also printed out the list of in-home providers in Fairfax County in the zip codes around our neighborhood and my husband's work -- I guess I can just start calling providers on the list, right? I feel so lost! I've also checked out the providers on infant-toddler.com -- their rates seem really high for in-home care, almost as much as a center in some instances
For what it's worth, we do not have a neighborhood list serve, and I've already visited the in-home provider recommended by one of my neighbors -- we were not impressed.
Any ideas you can provide would be greatly appreciated!
Re: Where did you find your nanny share or in-home daycare?
We found our nanny share on DC Urban Moms.
Another resource for in-homes is the VA Department of Social Services website; they do the licensing and inspections, so you can also see what the violations the places are getting (though you can make yourself crazy with it! If it's admin stuff, I wouldn't worry too much about it).
Good luck!
We did this pretty much. I didn't even really start calling until I was on maternity leave - some time in early May - and we just dropped DD off for her first day yesterday. We ended up visiting about 4 in-home daycares. I also second the suggestion by the pp who said to go on the VA social services website. I think every one we looked at had at least one violation, but if it was mostly paperwork related, it didn't bother me. Good luck! It's a bit overwhelming but I'm sure you'll find one you like.
You can take a look at the DC Nestie "how I found daycare" spreadsheet to see more info:
