I am considering taking 6-8 weeks off to be with my son and get him on board with therapies. most therapists work during regular business hours and the kind of job I hold does not allow me to be there for him. After a long discussion DH and I had, we have decided that I will use FMLA (if I can get it) for therapies and to be with DS for next few weeks.
Can anyone throw some light on this and if anyone has experience with using FMLA for ASD diagnosis? TIA
Re: Anyone ever used FMLA for ASD and therapies
I have used intermittent FMLA leave, as necessary, to take DS to therapy appointments. Ask your employer for the necessary paperwork -- you may be required to submit a doctor's note/certification. Note that you generally have to give 30 days advance notice for leave requests -- but there are exceptions for unexpected health situations.
If you meet the FMLA requirements, your employer must give you the leave (but they do not have to pay you for that time). I'm not sure what type of job you have, and whether you really want to take 6-8 weeks off, but don't rule out intermittent leave because it might be inconvenient for your employer.
Also, for most of my son's appointments, I am in the waiting room while he is back with the therapist (it would be a distraction for me to be in the treatment room with him). The thearpist will come out at the end of the session to give me a report on how he did, but that is usually the extent of my involvment in the treatment. It is not uncommon to see people working on their laptops in the waiting rooms.
