High-Risk Pregnancy

Progesterone Supplement Question

Hi ladies,

I don't believe I am really a high risk pregnancy at this point, but I figured you all might have the best answers to my question. :) I am 8 weeks pregnant with #2. I got my bloodwork results today and have borderline progesterone levels. I am at 11.76 and doc said she'd like to see it at a 15 or better. So she wants to start me on Prometrium until 12 weeks. I'm reading about Prometrium online now (dangerous, I know) and it sounds just awful. I work full time and have a 3 yo and really don't want to feel like crap for the next 4 weeks. Anyone have experience with this drug or perhaps a decent experience with a different drug?

 Thanks so much!

Re: Progesterone Supplement Question

  • I was on vaginal progesterone supplements from week 5 to week 14... I never had any negative side effects. I had to take it twice a day, I would set my alarm for an hour earlier than I had to get up, take it, and then lay down for an hour. Then I would take it again 12 hours later after I got home from work and I'd be sure to lay down for at least 20 minutes.

Of course, if you have the oral supplements, you won't need to do the laying down, but I haven't heard of anyone having side effects from the vaginal, I have heard some complaints with the oral. Hope that is helpful.

  • I took it vaginally 3x/day until 12 weeks. It can upset your stomach if swallowed. Taking it vaginally caused me some cramping and fatigue but my body got used to it as I continued taking it, and I didn't feel the side effects as badly. Step away from google! Talk to your doc if you have any questions. What you read is always so much worse than the actual experience.
  • My doc didn't give me the numbers on my progesterone level but they said it was a little lower than what they like. They called me on the phone and called in a prescription of 200 mg of oral supplement. I take it at bed time with my prenatal. so I can sleep through the nausea if there was any. I have only had a couple of the side effects. Minimal nausea and a little dizziness when standing too fast. Nothing too bad.

  • Hi!

I did the suppositories with my first 2 pregnancies and the oral with the 2nd two...and didn't have side effects that I would attribute to the progresterone at all.  I have read that the supplements will heighten your other early pregnancy/first trimester symptoms...but of course, how would you know if you are having m/s because you are newly pregnant or because of the supplements...right?

Good luck!  In my current pregnancy, by progesterone level was 1...after a few days on the supplements, it was up to 49!

  • I have been on oral pills since I was 4 weeks and haven't been sick from it at all. Just make sure you take it before you go to bed so you can sleep.

  • I am currently pregnant with my second child.  I was on it for my first child and have been on it for 3 days now with my second.  I have not gotten sick at all yet.  A little morning sickness in the morning but I can't say it is related to the pill.  I have an 18 month old at home who is always up and running.  I would say take it :)
