Birthstones

So I was bored this morning and was thinking about jewlery for some reason (lol) and I found out that October's birthstone is Opal. My DS's birthstone is Diamond. Not very colorful but I still think that will make for a very pretty mommies ring someday when we can afford it. :)

Re: Birthstones

  • I was looking them up last week, and two of the more modern "alternate" stones for October that I liked were the aquamarine and the pink tourmaline. There were a bunch on the site I found. I was happy since I'm not a fan of opals and love aquamarines. My H and I were talking about possibly getting me something not too expensive (a necklace maybe) with aquamarine in it that she can have when she is older. I have a ring with it that I love that was a gift for finishing grad school, so I don't mind adding to my collection. Stick out tongue

I am hoping I might be at least a few days late and hit November (EDD is Oct 27), but Opal is much better than November's birthstone IMO.

I have an April baby (son, born in 2009) too!  My grandmother passed away several months ago, and had a really pretty opal and diamond ring.  My mom and aunt decided that if I have a baby girl (I'm team green) then she will get the ring.  I was lucky enough to be the only July girl in our family, so her ruby and diamond ring was given to me.  We don't have the budget to buy jewelry, but I'd rather have a piece of jewelry that was passed down to me anyway.

I'm not so secretly hoping mine comes a bit early (not so early it compromises his health), but if things should happen I'll be happy. I don't want him born with a pink birthstone, for his sake! My husband's is purple, and he wouldn't put it on his class ring, he chose the sapphire instead.

Ooh, I was hoping for a September 30th baby too ( just like September better than October lol), but I didn't even think about the birth stone. I LOVE sapphire.

  • I am a September baby, and always loved my birthstone. LO will be born in September due to an induction. So he will definitely have sapphire.

I knew Tourmaline was an alternate but I thought AquaMarine was the birthstone for March? My sister was born in March and has been getting aquamarine stuff forever so if it isn't she has been wrong and will need to start getting different jewlery. lol

  • I am an October baby and I love Opal.  My mom gave me the prettiest opal necklace for my 30th birthday.  It will be a nice piece of jewlery to pass on to my little Oct baby one day!

I have the same EDD. My birthday is also in November and November's birthstone sucks. Its ugly and orange. I'm hoping I don't got too past my due date anyways.

This is also my EDD and I would think seeming as my baby is a boy he would like November's birthstone better but I am being selfish in this one and hoping I go in on my due date for the prettier of the two. :) I am so far leaning towards a repeat CS but not positive yet, it will depend on babies size at the time, so I should get my selfish wish.

  • I'm an October baby also and love opals, but just a warning... If you get opal jewelry, don't get a ring or bracelet.  They are very soft stones and break very easily.  I had an opal ring when I was little and the stone broke and we replaced it 3 times before we put a sapphire in it.

    Good to know!  Thanks!

I'm also "kind of" hoping LO will be born in September since I am due Oct 5th, but he can come out when he's ready!  (As long as it's at least 36-37 weeks!)

I'm a november baby too... and YUCK! It's an ugly birthstone!! Probably the ugliest of all of them :( It always made me sad.

  • Sorry to bump this thread up again, but I didn't have a chance to post this yesterday. Here is my source for saying aquamarines are an alternate stone--it's pretty interesting stuff. Some months (like February) really only stick the traditional stone for everything, while others have a ton.
