DH's work has a party coming up this Saturday and I'm kind of at a loss as to what to wear. I've tried asking him and he's no help. All he said is that the men must wear a coat and tie and women need to wear evening attire. I don't know if that means floor length gowns, cocktail dresses, etc. This is a newish job and I haven't really met anyone there yet so I don't want to go looking out of place. Also, his work is a slightly older, more conservative environment so the girly strapless dresses I usually like are out. Yesterday I picked up two dresses but now I'm thinking both are wrong.
Dress 1:

Dress 2:

So, now I'm thinking #1 is just too casual. What appealed to me was that more conservative side of it. I don't want to be coming of as overtly sexy at the same time I don't really want to be looking dumpy either.
Dress #2 I'm thinking is too much skin on top and also maybe too casual. That said this is the kind of dress I tend to gravitate toward, kind of pretty/flirty. Help!
Oh, also it's going to be a party in the evening by the beach.
Re: NBR - Need dress help! (LIP)
What type of company does he work for? Casual/cool/hip dot com? Or stodgy old bank? I'm kinda thinking I agree with you. I'm not sure either of those seem right for a coat and tie formal work event. I don't think you need floor lenght... but a little more dressy than either of those.
Here are that are similar, but I think might be a better fit.

He works for a law firm - old and stodgy is probably pretty accurate which is why I was thinking I needed to go a little more conservative but then it still needs to be dressy.
ETA: oh and thanks for the dress links, number 3 looks good...
I'm at a law firm too... if you added a jacket to the second dress, it would work. But I wouldn't wear it with top/straps the way they are.
I think you're right, while both of those dresses are super cute, I don't think they're appropriate for the event.
I like the last one A posted, I think it's a good option.
I think this might be a good choice

And I think this one is nice

I agree that those two are probably too casual. From your description, it sounds like maybe a cocktail dress--especially since it will be by the beach. Maybe something like these:

I like how this dress has a little pizzazz on the top: https://shop.nordstrom.com/S/mbn-beaded-mock-two-piece-sheath-dress/3168974?origin=category&resultback=6853

This one is beautiful! and I think it would look great!

ooh, that is very pretty!
thanks everyone for the links, I think those dresses are much more appropriate for the occasion and it gave me a lot to go off of. I think I'll return the other two dresses and start over.
I don't know how quickly they ship but did you check out Rent the Runway.com at all. They have got some gorgeous stuff and reasonable prices.

ok, it looks like they couldn't there that quickly but it might be worth a call to check. For future events though it's good to keep in mind.
This one I love, the shoulder gives you some youthful edge but it still looks appropriate for law firm.

I really like the way this one drapes. No idea how you're feeling about your post baby body but this looks like it would be flowy in all the right ways.
