PSA: breastmilk storage

I'm sure some of you are in the same "my supply is outpacing my babies" boat as I am... I found some awesome storage bags!

The Snappie bottles the hospital gives me are so bulky and really take up a lot of room and my freezer is slap full. I got on Amazon and was going to buy the Medela storage bags but they were OMG expensive! Instead I ordered a box of a brand called Honeysuckle and they are FABULOUS! They hold a TON (it says 6 oz on the bag but I have fit up to 8 without them busting), they lay flat to store and take up much less space, they don't rip when you're defrosting, and they are CHEAP (I got 300 for only $45!)

Just thought I'd throw that out for all my other power pumping mamas Smile

  • Lansinoh are also good & cheaper...I think. Never sleep - can't do math. I read somewhere not to pack too much milk in (not over 4 oz? - I pushed to 6, though) because when it freezes it could tear (expand). Either way it still saves space. My NICU kept saying, bring more in! well at discharge they handed me five sacks with over 250 bottles!!!! They're still on ice so have to pump and dump sometimes; breaks my heart. Sad

  • Thanks for the info!  My NICU is actually telling me to store the milk in my freezer now as they don't have room in their freezer Wink  I suppose that's a good problem to have...

The Lanisoh ones had reviews that said they ripped when you defrosted in them... do they not do that for you?

I don't know! I've only had to defrost a few times & have taken from the NICU bottles first. HAH! well. I'll keep you posted via a bad review on the boards one day, but I got them on recommendation from a friend who's never had a problem.

  • Breastmilk can keep in a deep freezer for up to 12 months! Soooo worth it to buy one for $200 vs. throwing out breastmilk!!  Or ask friends to store breastmilk for you.

I used the lansinoh bags and never had a problem with leaking when defrosted, unless I overfilled them.  I think over filling them leads to leaks (if they've been frozen awhile) with just about any brand.

Good luck! and great job pumping!!

  • Simplisse bags and Lansinoh bags are great too.  The simplisse bags are thicker than the Lansinoh bags, but other than that they are identical.

Medela and Ameda don't have double seals.  I hate them for that.  I lost entire bags of milk because they are so hard to tell if they are closed or not.

  • I am so thankful for this post. I will be away from LO next weekend and need an easy way to store what I pump over the course of 36 hours.

Can you get the bags in stores...Target or BrU?

You sure can! or you can sign up for Amazon Mom and get free 2 day shipping - for a better price. In a pinch - go to BRU, Target, even CVS :)

I'm gonna go out on a wacky limb here and say you own a home, live in the 'burbs, and aren't living paycheck to paycheck. If so, then you're right! soOOo worth it. However, everyone I know rents from slumlords and have teeny iceboxes crammed as full as possible. Geeked Think we'll be a'ight.

If you're interested at all, I bought this one at Target:

    https://www.target.com/Emerson-3-5-Cu-Ft-Freezer/dp/B0042F3LC8/ref=sc_qi_detaillink

And it fits in my teeny tiny 2-bedroom apartment. It holds quite a bit too!

But actually, the preemie guidelines are 3 months in a fridge freezer and 6 months in a deep freezer.

We almost bought that one.  We ended up buying an upright freezer because we have the space and know it will be more practical for us in the long run.  But, I agree this is a great option for small spaces.

Well, how 'bout that? That's awesome! I was picturing the sorts of freezers you see in convenience stores & garages. [sorry so snarky - my house burned down five weeks before birth so the suggestion of buying a major appliance for 'cheap' rubbed me the wrong way at the moment] - we're still replacing things like salt & pepper!
