How long for croup to go away?

DS came down with croup on Sunday. Took him to the ER Sunday night. The barky cough was gone Monday morning but was replace by the rattle-ey wet sounding cough. Sunday night, his fever was 104.7 when we got to the ER. We alternated Tylenol and Motrin all Monday and the fever was gone. Tuesday we just did Motrin every six hours and the fever stayed away. We didn't wake him up over night to give another dose like we had been doing and the fever was back again today. It never got much above 101 but I feel terrible. We are back to the alternating Tylenol and Motrin.

So, how long with this last? With all the drainage he has now, I'm afraid he is going to end up with an ear infection from the whole ordeal.

Re: How long for croup to go away?

  • DD had croup along with an ear infection last month.  They gave her steroids for the barky cough and antibiotics for the ear infection.  She was 80% better within 24 hours.  The wet cough lasted for about 2 weeks, but other than that she was much better almost instantly.  The fever tapered off pretty quickly.  Is it possible he already has an ear infection and that's causing the fever?

Hope your DS feels better soon!

  • He probably does have an ear infection. Sunday night they were clear but he always gets one when he has a runny nose. We have our follow up on Friday afternoon so I'm sure we will be getting antibiotics then. I just snuck into his room to give him another dose of Motrin and he was sweaty so I'm hoping his fever broke.

DD had a "textbook case" of severe croup last winter.  I took her to the dr, and they started her on an oral steroid and albuterol (w/nebulizer) in the office.  We continued both treatments at home for about 3-4days before it was really better, but I noticed improvement fairly quickly (maybe 24hrs???).  The cough hung on forever, but after those first 3-4days she was really back to being herself again.  We did not have an ear infection before, during or after the croup though.

  • Ds has had croup twice.  The first time, he was fine after a few days except he had a cough that lasted maybe 3-4 weeks.  The second time, I guess he had built up some immunity or something because it only lasted a few days total.
