speaking of cold turkey

We "threw away" all Justin's diapers (i packed them away for the other kids, lol). With only 2 months til pre-K we have no choice but to potty train. We're following the 3 day program (thanks JenJar!).

This morning he did nothing until like 9:30, I watched him like a hawk. Then all the sudden he screams... "I need a diaper!!!" and runs behind the couch. I sprinted to grab him but we didn't make it-he pooped in his underwear and was all upset crying.

It's so hard to try to watch him for potty "signs" when taking care of the twins. I'm trying to pump or feed them riiight after he goes so I'm sure he won't go again. In 2 1/2 years of being a mommy this is my least favorite/most frustrating thing I've done :(

  • It is going to be really hard with the twins, too, but hang in there.  Is anyone available during the day to help out for this week so you can focus more on Justin's potty signs?  It took exactly 1 month from the day we started for G to poop on the potty, and even then we weren't completely poop trained for a looong time.  I know a lot of moms don't like them, but having the little potty seat was key for us.  Once he got used to his own signs, he would run in and go by himself if I was in the shower or something.  Even with a stool he can get onto or off the potty by himself comfortably yet.

  • Yeah, don't get discouraged by the pooping thing. It also took Rosie about a month to figure that out. Peeing was much easier for her, it really only took a few days for her to get the hang of that. If she started pooping in her underwear I would just run with her to the bathroom and try to get some of it in the potty. Rewards really helped too- Rosie would get 2 chocolate chips if everythig went into the potty.
  • MrsWhite - just another suggestion for you.  When we first started potty training, I'd put the little potty in the back of the car just in case he had to go while we were out and we weren't near any place to stop.  It came in handy many times.  I'd even let him go potty before we went into a store so I wouldn't have to make a public restroom run.  I'm thinking with the other two to worry about, that might be a good option for you so you're not having to get the twins out to make a potty stop, etc.  Just an idea.
  • Good luck! I am so not looking forward to potty training! (even though I will be happy when I don't have to buy diapers anymore!)
  • I'm kinda of the camp that if it's a struggle, then they really aren't ready.  Dh was all about the 3 day PT after DS's future preschool director recommended it.  Even better, he decided that the boys were going to do it together during a week that DH was off work (yay  for me!).  Well that lasted a day, DS just kept wetting himself and not caring.  We put him back in diapers and told him to let us know when he was ready to use the "big boy potty".  About 3 weeks later, DS told us one saturday morning that he wanted to use the big boy potty and underwear.  He had one accident that morning, and has been PT'd ever since.  Especially with boys, I feel like sometimes you can't rush them.  But GL with whatever method you decide to use!

  • We are doing this week of putting him on the potty throughout the day and next week, I think, underwear.  I am so not ready.  He actually peed 2 times on the potty today, but the issue is that he has no idea when he is peeing.  He agreed to sit and told me he was going to go, but then it took 10-20 minutes for him to pee and he had to keep checking and literally didn't think he went when he stood up to get in the bath.  Yikes.  I SO need him to go to preschool.  LOL.  Come on boys!  Potty train!
