I wouldn't try it at all. Some babies have their entire nose and mouth area blocked during the night, and for some unexplained reason aren't awakened by this. But, maybe at his 2 month checkup you can ask your pediatrician. Until then don't do it. That's just my advice. GL.

our ds is currently sleeping on his tummy on the couch however this is daytime, I don't think I would have a problem though with night time but at night he tends to sleep on his side( on the bed between us). That being said he can easily move his head from side to side and can roll from tummy to side and side to back without too much of a problem.
If your comfortable with him during the day I would say try at night but make sure where he is sleeping isn't too soft, also if you have a movement senser for the crib that may help with some of the worry

I didn't want to try it, but my H said not to worry. The reason why I started having her sleep on her tummy is because my H laid her on her tummy to sleep when she was like 3 days and she enjoy it. I also noticed that she had good head and neck control and still has, so I don't worry as much. I only have her sleep on her tummy during the day when I can be checking on her though. I am actually having trouble at night because she doesn't like to be tight up with her blanket anymore (she likes her hands free) and she is always waking herself up with her hands. I need to find another way because I won't have her sleep on her tummy at night time.
If you think your baby is not ready for it just wait until he has more control, and of course I would only do it during the day when I can watch. GL

My LO definitely prefers sleeping on her side or her stomach but we *only* let her do this while she is lying on us or right near us and while we are awake (although I have woken up to her on her side when she started on her back while she's in bed with us -- I am certainly worried about the safety of this, but I hope that her close proximity would alert us to any breathing problem right away and I always put her to sleep on her back if we are going to sleep too).
Camryn is a side sleeping addict-- in fact she's on my chest right now and has squirmed her way onto her side even though I put her on her tummy.
We cloth diaper and the fluffy butt of the cloth makes it easy to balance her on her side-- that said-- I dont put her on anything but her back unless I can see and check on her often.

My little girl is a tummy sleeper also. I only let her tummy sleep during the day when I am awake and can keep an eye on her. I would never do it at night while i'm sleeping. If you are worried about putting her on her tummy flat, My LO also really seems to love tummy sleeping in the boppy. I put her in tummy down with her arms over the top. She is actually napping right next to me now like this..
Just use good judgement that is all.

We do tummy sleeping - we kept trying to do back sleeping til she was 6-7 weeks but she'd wake up constantly and obviously hated it. By then she had really good neck control and could push herself up on her arms to reposition herself, so I let her do it. I now swaddle her with her arms out so she can move herself around, and she sleeps great.
Been away from theBump for a while, getting active again for all the good advice
We have been letting LO sleep on her tummy the past couple days/nights. Yes, I let her sleep on it at night. I get up and check on her when I randomly wake up at night. She just wouldn't sleep any other way. Hated sleeping on an incline in the R&P...wouldn't sleep very long on her back flat. Judge if you must...but this is the only way we could get her to sleep. For my sanity and hers, it's what works for us. Do I wish she'd sleep on her back so I didn't have to put her on her tummy, yes. But she just won't.
We started with just doing it during naps during the day and she slept so good that we decided to do it at night. She has good head/neck control and can move her head from one side to another with ease.
Like a PP mentioned, a movement monitor may make you feel more at ease. I don't have one of these, but have thought about getting one...especially once I move her to her crib. Right now she's in the PNP in our room.
I'm usually relaxed about "the rules" but this is one I would never, ever break. I have 4 kids and never put any of them to sleep on their tummy. It's so unnecessary and just not worth the risk, imo.

Agreed CVL! I have come across a few infants who DON'T sleep on their backs. Literally, will only sleep for 5 minutes at a time while on their backs, but on their bellies, will sleep for hours. Fortunately, my LO is a back/side sleeper. However, when I was a baby, and even my little brother who is 17, our parents were told to put us on our bellies to sleep. I think tummy sleeping should be utilized cautiously IF it's right for you and your baby. Sleep is sooooo necessary for both parents and children.

Re: i really want to try TUMMY SLEEPING
i break a lot of the parenting "rules", but this isn't one i'd mess with
the most tummy sleeping my kids get is sleeping on my chest. otherwise, we all tough it out
i know it's tempting, but i just wouldn't do it
like pp said I break a lot of the rules too

i would try side sleeping before tummy sleeping
prop him up with a rolled up receiving blanket behind his back and see how he does with that
