I have pih and did with my last pregnancy as well. Last time I never spilled protein in my urine. This time after two 24 hour urine catches they have my numbers for protein at 305 and 310. I'm being sent to a maternal fetal medicine doctor tomorrow and then an appt. with my ob later in the day.
Can anyone give me a heads up on what will happen at the mfm appt? I didn't think 310 was high but the way the nurses have talked it seems they're pretty concerned. If you had to go on bed rest how strict was it? I'm only 30 weeks so hopefully delivery can hold off awhile. I know my questions are vague. I'm just nervous and looking for some idea of what I'm looking at. Thanks!
Re: Pre-e questions
I was just put on bed rest last week and my protein number was 368 and my blood pressure is borderline high. My dr wants me to make it to at least 36 weeks which he doesn't see as a problem but he doesn't feel I will make it until 40 weeks. My bed rest is not completely strict, I can get up and shower and go to a movie or grab a quick meal out, but I am supposed to stay off my feet as much as possible. I have spent most of my time on the couch b/c it is also really hot here and I just feel blah.
GL!!
First off, I am sorry you are dealing with this! Pre-e is the worst. They diagnose pre-e when you have high bp (don't know what your numbers are, but with a diagnosis of PIH, I am assuming it's high) and spilling protein. They diagnose with a 300. You are in the mild pre-e range, but still certainly pre-e. Sorry!
I can only speak for my experience. I was diagnosed at 31 weeks and was put on hospital bed rest. Part of that was because my bp was out of control and I was an hour away from the hospital, so I am not saying that is in your future. If you are put on bed rest at home, it will be really strict. At the hospital, I could only get up to use the restroom and take a short shower (which I eventually had to sit in a shower chair for). After a week or two, I had to rest only on my left side. It was pretty awful, but it's totally doable.
I don't know exactly what the MFM will tell you tomorrow, but I would mentally prepare for staying off of your feet until you deliver. If you are at home, get some people to bring meals or hang out with you. Also, find some good books or movies to pass the time. Bed rest makes things a LOT better - I know it's hard, but it really does help. I ended up delivering my girl at 34.5 weeks and now she is FABULOUS. She didn't need NICU time and came home once I was well enough to. Just relax, relax, relax. Everything will be okay! Feel free to PM if you have more questions, need to swear, or need some support. Let us know how you are doing and what happens tomorrow!
I am in a similar situation, 28 weeks, and my doctor prescribed bed rest at home. The MFM monitors my baby's growth and fluid levels to make sure she is not under distress. She also increased my bp medicines. My regular OB has been checking my bp, protein and liver enzymes.
PPs, thank you so much for sharing your experiences as well.
I was admitted to L&D last friday at 31w5d for a BP of 160/100 in the office, slight headaches and 2+ protein in my urine. I was put on mag sulfate for about 4 hours and then my BPs came down to the 130s/80s. They did a 24 hour urine and it was 252. They kept me for 4 days total to monitor and I was able to go home Monday and was told to "take it easy" ~ no work, no heavy chores, etc. I went back to dr on Wens after doing a repeat 24 hour urine and it was 150. My BP was 160/100 again, probably because I was convinced my test results were going to be worse and they'd admit me back to the hospital. After the dr visit it was 143/95. Dr sent me home on bedrest (up to bathroom, couch, kitchen for SHORT periods of time!) and told me to monitor my BP 4 times a day at home. So far it's been in the 120s-130s/80s while in bed, but after I get up for a bit it jumps into 140s/90s. I see the dr again tomorrow and have no idea what to expect!
I too wonder if they are going to let me continue on bedrest until baby decides to come, or if they'll induce me early. 7 weeks (getting to 40 weeks) seems like FOREVER to be on bedrest! It is worth it, I know, but this is hard on a person who likes to go go go!!! Best of luck to you ~ update us when you know more!
