glider alternatives...

...so I'm pretty much stuck on this glider issue.  It's the last piece we need to be relatively done with the nursery.  They're all hideous to me, and I'm not into paying a ton of money for something I think is kinda ugly (with the exception of the million dollar Pottery Barn Kids ones).  If you are also in this boat, what kind of alternatives are you coming up with?  I'd love to see some out of the box thinking on this item.  Otherwise, it's ikea city for me---which would feel kinda regressive.

Re: glider alternatives...

  • I found an upholstered pottery barn rocker on craigslist for $100 for the nursery. With DS, I just used an upholstered armchair that didn't rock that I found at a garage sale and reupholstered.

  • BRU has some great gliders, similar to the Pottery Barn Kids gliders but not as expensive. We are getting one next week and we loved in when we tried it in the store.

  • My parents were looking to get rid of an old recliner chair, so they gave it to us.  I bought a slipcover online (it was about $60), so now the recliner looks brand new and matches the nursery.  We had previously looked at gliders, but found them all to be way too expensive, and the ones we had tried out in person all seemed a bit shaky... could just be that the floor models were worn out, but we like this recliner so much better!  It's a little bigger than a glider, but it'll work just fine.

  • I was in the same boat. I didn't like any of the gliders I found or the oens I did just cost way too much. DH and I had been talking for a while about getting a recliner for our living room so we went and looked at some and found a perfect one at Ashley's Furniture. It was on clearance so we paid 200 for it. The one I was looking at at BRU would have been over 400 with the ottoman.

  • we have a glider (given to us and reupholstered) and used it once.  Ended up that a regular living room oversized chair and ottoman worked much better for us.  and it was cheaper and it's now in our living room.  We still have the glider in this baby's room now, but it's more for decoration.  I doubt we'll use it.  lol.

  • We ended up getting one last time from BRU that looked like a regular oversized upholstered chair but also rocked. I don't know if they still sell them anymore since it was 3 years ago, but I liked them way better than the ones that were wooden, and once the kids were no longer in a "nursery" we just moved it to our living room because it looked like a regular chair. We will be using the same one for this baby.

  • I'm small, (5') so bigger gliders & rocking chairs are uncomfortable for me. I found an antique rocking chair in beautiful condition for $40. It is quite sturdy has a comfortable back and arm rests, and I'll be putting a seat cushion on it. Like PPs mentioned, try craigslist, eBay, even Etsy might have something. And you aren't opposed to used furniture, antique shops & auctions could be a good resource, too.

  • I want to do one of these Ikea chairs...

For me they have just the right amount of bounce, take up less space, have no pinching parts, and won't annoy the crap out of my downstairs neighbor. Plus my SIL has one and they are super comfy.

  • I think the regular wooden gliders are hideous too. I just couldn't get one of those, so I stalked craigslist religously until one was posted that I liked. It is very similar to this one but in a cream color: https://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3096501 and has an ottoman too. I only paid $100 for it too, so definite bonus!

If I hadn't found this, I would have just purchased an armchair instead that didn't glide, rock or swivel.

I think we're going to start with this option as well, although we're going to try the Poang rocking chair.

  • We had a glider my mom had bought for her house but gave it to me. It broke within a year and I didn't care for it as it wasn't that comfortable. I was recently at my inlaws and saw a smaller lazy boy type chair that was brown, it rocks and swivels so I asked my MIL how much I could buy it from her for. (its in their garage) and she gave it to me. I just have to get DH or BIL to drop it off here. Someone posted a question about chairs about a month ago and there was a suggestion from walmart or target, I can't remember but it looks like a nice comfy chair and its around 200. Really nice. Maybe look through to find that post.

That's a great deal!  Has it arrived?  Is it comfortable?

  • Yes, we got it last week...it's not the most comfortable chair I've ever sat in, but not the least comfortable either...and for the price, it's great!

This is exactly which one I was referring to. No need to search for the post. =D

This sounds a lot like what we have. I liked the look of it better than the wooden gliders. Plus it is way comfortable. The best part for me was I got it off Craigs List for a lot cheaper than what I found in store.
