Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Scheduling wellness visits - a question

My pedi came highly recommended from several friends. And for the most part, I like the clinic. My biggest issue is how quickly wellness visits get filled up.

I took DS in April, and at the time, The end of July schedule wasn't up yet on their computer. So they said to call the next day and I should be able to schedule. Well, fast forward a month later and I though "Oops! Forgot to call!". So at the end of May I called and the first wellness visit they could get me in on was for SEPTEMBER (even though I wanted end of July/beginning of August). I took the spot, but now it makes me angry.

I know it's my fault that I forgot to call the next day, but is it normal for pedi's to be so busy that I can't schedule an appt 2 months ahead of time?

  • I don't get it either.  Yet, you call next week for a sick appointment and you will get right in!

  • They should probably extend the scheduling calendar ahead further than 2 months.  LO had his 18 month appointment and doesn't go back until 24 months and I was able to schedule his appointment.  Also, I made an appointment yesterday morning for him to see his pedi last night.  Maybe it also depends on the hours the pedi works.

Sorry you have to go through that.  Can you look for another pedi or are you attached to this one?

  • I think that is odd.  I always make LOs appt 6 months in advance.

  • When DS is sick, they can usually see me the same day or very early the mext morning. I think they have so much time blocked off for sick kids, that the wellness visits book up fast.

I'm not overly attached. Actually, the Doc I saw (and liked) the most there has opened a new practice, but it's further away.

At our pedi office, each doc has a 'sick visit day' meaning they don't have any appointments until that particular day.  For a sick visit, I can see my pedi if she has an opening, or the 'sick' doc for the day.

  • I have the same problem with my primary care doctor... but way worse actually. Luckily, DS's pedi gets us in even if it's last minute. For his 12 month checkup we had to reschedule like a week before and they had plenty of availability. They are really accomodating.

  • In the late summer well visits are harder to come by because of all the kids going in for check ups and vaccinations before they go back to school.

  • Yes it's common. I work for a dr office- same one DS and I go to. They have different time slots for certain visit types- follow up visits, sick visits, wellness, etc. Each dr is only allowed a certain number of physicals each day as well as other types of appointments. We always book 6 months out.

  • This sounds like my DS pedi! (Are they in Ft Wash?) I'm trying to figure out when to call for his 24 month appt. I'm due in August with DS#2 so I may try to schedule Liam's appt during one of those first week's appts because they really don't schedule things more than 2-3 months in advance. So annoying but I do love that practice.

  • I make my well visit appts months ahead of time b/c it is hard to get them. I think I made their 12 & 18 mo appts at my 9 mo appt and my 24 mo at 18 mo appt and couldnt get it until 3 weeks after their bday.

Well visits are scheduled for longer time than sick visits & they only have a certain # of slots and are trying to fit a lot of kids in there, think about the infants coming up & the need for their visits, they have to 'save' some spots for them & also for the sick visits.
