Working Moms

Working moms that workout

When do you do it?  I used to get up at 5 and be done by 6 and out the door by 7:25.  But, that was with one child who was a bit older.  I always had a fall back that if I couldn't get up, my dd is old enough to come downstairs with me after work and play while I work out. But, with 2, I need to make sure i am up at 5, and just getting it done. I am a better mom, wife, better at my job etc, when I work out. anyone else out there to motivate each other?  Oh and I may get up earlier to pump too.

  • I'm worried about this one too.  I get up at 5:30am to work out but DD sleeps in until 7am.  I don't know how to do it with 2 babies.

I've tried mornng workouts in the past, but that is really difficult for me. I go to the gym at bedtime now, which works out well.

  • I'm currently taking advantage of the nice weather and take him with me...he goes in the jogging stroller and bike trailer most of the time...so I can work out whenever I want.  If he's not with me then I prefer evening workouts.

I wouldn't know how to fit it in if we had 2 so we're sticking with just 1 to be safe.

can you workout while dd is sleeping?  i try and workout while everyone is asleep and mh is "on duty".

Also, mh works late most nights, so it's only me, i need to get my workout done before work. It's hard ladies.

same here. we go running all the time, but after work, my dd will not love that. i want to be able to take her outside to play in the warm weather and not try to get in a good workout.  right now while on leave, my baby comes with me and loves it.

I can - in the mornings I ususally walk 3 miles (DH is obviously home, he's sleeping too).  When I was in weight loss mode last summer, I walked in the mornings and did Wii Fit in the evenings, after DD went to bed.  She's used to sleeping though noise, so that helps.

  • I aim for 3 days during the work week.

I'll either try to get to work a bit earlier those days (DH does dropoff), so I can leave earlier and hit the gym before picking up the girls.

If that doesn't work, DH picks up the girls on those days and I hit the gym after work on my way home.

  • I am a mom to a 19 month old.  I do my best to get to the gym by 5am.  However, sometimes sleep gets the best of me and I hit the snooze.  But, I too feel that I am a better mom, wife, better at my job, etc. when I get my morning works out in.  I have less motivation to do it in the evenings.  For one, I want to spend that time with my DD.  And although she goes to bed at 7pm, I feel that I should then do some things around the house as opposed to working out.  It's a hard balance and I'm curious if I'll be able to do it once we decide to try for #2.  I'm always looking for people to hold me accountable!  My long range goal is a marathon in November.

  • Mornings always works better for me.  Two times a week I ride my bike to work and back home (that is an hour total a day).
  • I try for 3 morning a week- never for an hour - but I can squeeze in 30 minutes in my basement while the kids are sleeping or they will come downstairs and play while I am working out.  I know your LO is very young but that's temporary.  It will get easier.  I also have a gym at work so if I can squeeze it in, I'll go one day at lunch as well.
  • I'm pretty lucky as my office has a gym in it.  So I'll work through my lunch and go down to the gym at 4:00 and workout until 5:00.  I can't get up early and find that once I'm home with my family it's difficult to commit to working out.

this also, I want my time after work with my kids, cook dinner, laundry, yikes! LOL.  I am sticking to my 5 AM. I am also trying do a half, so we can do this!

  • Pre-Ryan, I used to work out after work. Now I get up at 530 a.m. to get it done, so I have more time at night with him. I'm sure it'd be much more difficult with two. But DH knows that working out is really important to me (it's my best stress-reliever), so he always helps me find time.

  • I have another 20 weeks to go but this is a concern of mine as well. I didn't work out much before I was pregnant, but have always been in pretty good shape. I've been walking a lot to stay fit since I found out I was pregnant and am hoping to step things up once baby is here to get back to my pre-pregnancy shape.

Best of luck! I'm sure it's hard, but it can be done. Just try to stay focused and keep the end result in mind :)

I joined the gym next to my work and take 1 hr 15 min lunch breaks (working 9 hrs 15 min). This allows me 45 minutes of exercise and a quick shower.  I eat lunch at my desk while working.  I know I'm not looking fabulous upon my return but it's the only time I have to work out.  I have a 2 yo and a 2 mo old, I'm tired when my kids sleep and need to sleep then too.

Mh is so great about it too and does a lot to help, best stress reliever.

I am so glad that others get up at early. I will feel better when I am lacing my sneakers at 5 AM.

  • I'm marathon training and need to fit in a *lot* of working out. Granted I have just one kid who also sleeps in until 7. I've been injured so I'm currently trying to bike to work once in awhile. It's 15 miles each way- but that's only about 1.5 hours each way. I feel great knowing I'm getting 3 hours of exercise a day with minimal interuption in DS' schedule! It does require DH to drop off and pick up DS. I totally used to think this would be impossible- but I've just had to made it work! During marathon training I get my midweek runs in over my lunch break- rain or shine. Most runs I go over 1 hour but no one at work seems to notice. Long runs I've started getting up at daybreak so I'm home no later than 10.
  • I run at 8pm with DS in the jogging stoller 2 days a week.  Then on either Saturday or Sunday I run during his naptime.
  • I have a weird working situation that isn't quite the same as everyone else...but I will say that it is HARD to find the time and motivation to work out. I work M-F mornings for one job, and then 2 evenings a week for another job.  I pretty much try to stay away from working out on weekends - that is my *me* time as well as my family time.

Right now I try to get to the gym (with childcare) at least once, and usually 2 or 3 evenings a week.  It doesn't always happen though.  There are so many other things going on that get in the way.  I try to work-out at home at least once or twice a week, usually after they are in bed for the night.  I have various dvds, rent some from Netflix, or occasionally go for a run if DH is home.

  • Oh, I wanted to add that I really try to have an *active* lifestyle as well.  We go on family walks several times a week.  We go to the pool a lot and I try to ACTUALLY swim quite a bit before my younger one demands out of his floatie :-P hehe.  And I do purposefully park further away at work every day so that I have to walk more.  I figure even if I have a not-so-good work-out week (last week I only got in two very short work-outs) I'm still trying my best to move and be active.

  • Early in the morning, after work, when DH gets home, with LO (running stroller, mom & me classes, Netflix stream of workout videos), or after she goes to sleep I'll use the apartment gym.
  • I hired a personal trainer, and I do that once a week at 7:30p (my son is usually down for the night by that point - barely).  Then, I work out once or twice more during the work week and both days on the weekends.  Yes, I love spending the weekend time with my kiddo, but he's fine without me for an hour both days.  I usually try to time it during naptimes since I'm breastfeeding.

On the days I don't work out, I try to go to bed as early as I can.  That way, my sleep isn't totally messed up.  I'm still getting up with my son about 2x / night.  I also drink lots of coffee.

I literally live right across from the gym, too.  That helps.  A lot.

  • I am a teacher, so I work from 7:15 to about 4.  A gym near my school offers a class for teachers from 4-5.  I keep my daughter in daycare until 5 M and W.  On Friday, I coach Girls on the Run, so I try to run with the girls depending on the lesson for that day.  I also do a bootcamp class on Saturdays at the gym while my husband is home with my daughter.

  • I've got a pregnancy DVD that I'm doing 2 mornings a week at 5:15 a.m. and once on the weekends. We will keep DS1's nanny while I'm on maternity leave so I am hoping I have the energy to work out while DS2 is napping. Frankly, once I have #2 and go back to work I doubt I'll be able to work out for a while what with pumping, working, trying to spend time with both kids, needing some amount of sleep. I will probably have to drop my workout at least until I stop nursing and/or DS2 is sleeping through the night.
