Best friend got pregnant with IUD (paragard)

My best friend just called me in tears. She's pregnant, just took 4 tests today and all 4 were positive! She has a DD, she'll be 1 year in Sept and this new baby will be due in March. I'm so excited for her, probably more excited than she is at this point! LOL.

I'm just wondering if anyone else has ever gotten k/u with an IUD? Or know anyone who has been pregnant with it? Also, I'm just a little scared for her to make sure it's a viable pregnancy.

Thanks in advance! :)

Re: Best friend got pregnant with IUD (paragard)

  • my friend got pg with one(i am not sure which one) and she had a healthy pregnancy and delivery.  It was her 4th baby...they are now taking birth control into a new level with a snip snip...haha

  • DH was an IUD baby.  He was delivered happy and healthy and the IUD came out after the placenta.
  • I had a friend get pregnant on a Paragard. She did go full term with her pregnancy and the baby was healthy but she did have a hard pregnancy. The IUD was not able to be removed safely so it stayed in durning the pregnancy. I am not sure if that had any impact or if she would have had problems anyway. She was on bedrest for 4.5 months.

I hope she has a safe pregnancy.

  • Two of my friends have had IUD babies, and a family member was an IUD baby as well.  Hopefully all will go well for your friend.  She'll get over her shock and probably end up loving the spacing - mine are 17 months apart and I love it.

  • Crying at these stories...I have the paragard now. The LAST thing we need is another baby on the way. Stick out tongue

  • My Mom's friend had an IUD baby after her older 2 were in college.  (They drove to the kids' colleges to tell them...poor kids thought sure she was coming to tell them she had cancer.  They never dreamed they'd be having a little brother.)

In her case, they determined that the IUD must have fallen out.  No issues and a healthy baby.

Me too!  I have a Mirena...but still YIKES!  I was iffy on doing something permanent since I'm still pretty young but this thread is pushing me towards it.

  • My friend just had her 3rd baby last week and had the IUD.  The first was an oops, not taking any birth control, 2nd was while she was on the pill and now the 3rd with the IUD in...I think there is a little snip snip happening soon if not already!

  • Yes, I got pregnant with Ruby with a Paragard.  I think I had it in for 2 months and then I got pregnant.  When I went to get checked, the IUD was gone!  So apparently it fell out without me noticing or feeling anything.  After Ruby was born I got the Essure procedure done and I'm still paranoid I'm gonna get pregnant again!!
  • :: raises hand::

It happened about... 2 years ago ::looks down at ticker:: Yep. About 2 years.

In my case my IUD had fallen out. It's actually somewhat common (I think 8% of women have their Paraguard fall out within the first year - something they neglect to tell you!!). Mine was in for years... maybe 5-6 before it came out. What happens most often is that the IUD strings get tangled up with a tampon and whooosh, out it comes! I didn't feel a thing or even notice. I had my annual 3-4 weeks before I got pregnant and everything looked great with the IUD.

There can be some complications with an IUD still in the body but hopefully those won't happen with your friend. She'll need to see a doctor ASAP for an ultrasound to see if the IUD is still in place and take it from there. My bet is that it just fell out. It's totally scary!

  • Wow, I think I'd be a little freaked out too.  But our boys are a little less than 16 months apart and we did it on purpose.  We love it.  I don't mind having 2 in diapers at all.  So far, it's working out great.

  • I would imagine it's pretty rare.  I believe they are like 98% effective or somewhere high up there.  I have had mine for a year and it's done it's job so far.
  • 3 of my sisters 4 kids were conceived while she was on some type of birth control.  Once she was even on the shot.  It happens. Congrats to your friend!

Ahh! I'm on the Mirena too. Now I'm debating going to buy a pregnancy test haha!

  • I am getting an IUD put in tomorrow (ParaGuard). Just had my 4th baby this past May 26th and my hubby and I are DONE. We just can't afford for him to get fixed right now. This better work...or I'll cry    :*(
