not very gracefully either, it would have been a headfirst dive if I had not been able to grab him. He was playing in his crib while I put away laundry and he just climbed up the side and was able to push up on his arms and propel his upper body out. There was nothing in the crib for him to step on or anything. I was able to mostly grab him but he did land on the floor a little - luckily onto a small rug in there. It scared him, but I'm sure he will try it again soon. He went right to sleep tonight, but I will be totally nervous until we figure something out.
I think we are just going to kid proof his room, gate his door and just convert his crib to a toddler bed.
Re: J can climb out of his crib :(
Wow, so great that you were there to catch him! We've already been to the ER for stitches once, and our boy is very active and accident prone, so the thought of this really freaks me out.
What are you doing to "kid proof" the room? Does he have a dresser? Do you secure all the furniture to the wall? I've thought about this, but really don't know what's normally done.
I still need to think about it more... J loves to climb anything, so he's accident prone too. No trips to the ER yet, thank goodness but he came close when he "jumped" (he can't really jump so it was more like he just said JUMP! and then face planted) off a high curb and bit his bottom lip from both sides. The mouth bleeds... a lot! ugh.
I need to figure out a way to keep him from getting into the folding closet door. I will probably attach the dresser to the wall... but I bet he will try to open the drawers and climb in those so the answer might have to be moving it out of the room entirely.
Other than that I will just take the hard edge and vintage toys out of the room. Keep the diaper pail somewhere else (because he likes to go through that if given the chance, yuck!) and even though the possibility of him managing to grab the cords I'm going to but a cord catcher up for the blinds because that scares me.
eta: a tall gate at the doorway will be needed too because he has been able to open the doors in our house for quite a few months now since they are all those french handle ones.
This will all wait a while though because we are having a mini heat wave in this area so he will be sleeping on his mattress on the floor in our room (or in our bed) for a while b/c that is the only room we have a/c in.
We don't have this issue -- A is still in our bed, but my friend had this issue. She got a crib tent and it solved her problems. She was not ready to move her 2 year old to a toddler bed just yet.

We also have folding closet doors in his room, too -- a double one and a single one. For the double, I've thought about stringing those plastic chain links across and hoping that the tension holds them shut. We've done that in the bathroom and it works decently. Not completely child-proof, but combined with teaching him not to do it (we've already had pinched fingers), hopefully it suffices. I don't know what to do with the single slider, though.
A can also open the french door handles. I got some babyproofing thing that goes over it, but we haven't installed it yet. Do you worry about him scaling the baby gate? We have one, but haven't used it, partially since I'm worried about him flipping over.
Cassie did this once too, just a few months before she turned 2 years old. She used the bumper in her crib as a "step." I think it scared her enough because she never did it again
I've heard good things about the the crib tents!
hmm, thanks everyone for the positive reviews of the tents. they seemed kind of pricey but it might be worth it. I just figured he would find a way to destroy or escape one of those. He thinks it's really funny to crawl into his fabric playhouse, stand up, and then just fall forward and collapse the whole thing so I was wondering if a tent would be sturdy enough.
Last night he slept on his mattress on the floor of my room and it actually worked really well. He woke up once, stood up and patted me on the head to wake me up but laid back down when I told him it was still night night time.
wow that is so cute! I can't believe he just went back to bed like that. I don't think A could ever sleep like that but then again J is used to sleeping on a mat at daycare and A is not.
I think if he was that good at night w/you on the floor then he is ready for a toddler bed. just seems easier and more of a long term solution than the crib tent.
