DH and I are headed to SF to spend the night for his 40th birthday (holla back OVERNIGHT DATE! Yes!). I still have to book the hotel and I've been stalking Hotwire for a good price.
I kind of want to get somewhere fabulous for a REALLY great price. So far I'm seeing 3.5-4.5 star hotels around $200. That's ok, but like I said, I'd LOVE to get a REALLY good deal.
We are going in about 2 weeks... it's a Saturday. If I wait longer, will the deals be better or will the deals be gone??
And would you go 3.5 stars?
Last time we went we used Hotwire, went 4 starts and got the St. Francis, which IMO is a very super nice hotel. So maybe 3.5 isn't bad? (And btw, DH doesn't care about niceness of hotel but I do, ha ha).
We want to stay in the Union Square/Embarcadero area.
Any other amazing sites for hotels?!?!?
Re: Any one a Hotwire expert?
I love this site for bidding on Priceline or booking on Hotwire.
betterbidding.com
People give good examples of the types of hotels they get, what star rating it was, and the price.

I think you get a waaaaay better deal on Priceline. I've stayed at the St. Francis twice with Priceline for $79 each time, whoo hooo! I've also stayed at Marriott in the union square area, I think that was a 3* and it was $55. I really think you can't go wrong with putting in bids for a 4*, you know you're going to end up a really, really nice place. With two weeks to go I'd get on it and start bidding a bit on the cheap end so you have time to redo bids if you get rejected right off the bat.
For me, in SF, my go to bids are 4*-$75-$90 and 3* $55-$65.
Also if you ever want to do Napa, I have the most amazing little cottage that we rent. It's a total random, out back of someone's house, but you never see them. When you drive up it looks like a garage but that's only because you drive up to your own 1 car garage and then it's into a darling studio. It's a decent sized bedroom with soaring ceiling and a large bathroom, very modern. The killer though is the deck off the room with it's wonderful view of the mountains and the vinyards (seriously that is all you see). They've got two chaise loungers and then a table with two chairs plus a fire pit thing for cool nights. If that doesn't sound appealing enough you can head down your private path to your very own.....HOT TUB! It's totally private, super secluded and it's just you, the hubby and the stars.
The place is uh mazing. They only rent it on weekends and total bonus you can rent only one night too. It's $100 for one night or for the weekend it's $150. The even have a mini fridge that they stock with soda, water and beer and if you email them what you like a head of time they pick up your favorites.
Niiiiice. LOVES it!
J, thanks for all those recs. I actually tried Priceline last night and I think you're right, I think it's better. I'll keep you updated.
I wish we could go to Napa- sounds FAB. I have arranged for some peeps to come to a restaurant to have dinner with us in SF though, so that's out. I'm keeping it on the back burner for MY birthday, though! hee hee.
