pain meds before 4 month shots?

Los 4 month appointment isent until next week. but some people have said I should give him a dose of his pain med before we go to his pedi. The problem is that if I give it him before I can't give him more for 6 hours after his shots. What is better wait till after or give it to him before his shots iam confused. Last time we gave it when we got home and it took around 30 minutes to start working.

Re: pain meds before 4 month shots?

  • It's not pain related, but we give DS children's tylenol for the fever side effect of the vaccinations. Our doctor suggested we bring the tylenol along to his appointment and to give it to him after the shots... but we also live about 25 minutes (give or take depending on traffic) from the doctor. So, until we get home and give him the medication and then wait for it to start working, it would be close to an hour and it would be more than a mild fever by that time.

  • For her last round of shots I waited until I thought she was in pain. I don't like taking or giving meds unless they are needed.

  • I figured it was better to wait and see last time he definitly needed some . I just dident understand the point of giving it before he even got the shots

  • I just got home from the pedi and she asked how he did after his 2 months.  I was honest and said he was a complete disaster (pain, screaming, fever).  She brought in a dose of tylenol along with his shots.  I figure he's getting a second round of the same vaccines, the side effects will most likely be the same.  Plus, the Prevnar shot really hurts them.  He wouldn't calm down after it!

    ditto.

  • My pedi had me give him the tylenol beforehand so that if he did experience pain the medicine would already be getting to work.  I wasn't sure about dosage though so I took it along and gave it to him in the office while we were waiting for him to get his shots.

  • I would wait until after the shots...his reaction might be different than the first time around.

  • I was told by the doctor to wait until the baby has at least 38.5Centigrade (101.3F) in order to give it to her.  That's what I did - once - it worked and I didn't have to do it again.  Remember that Tylenol is not good for the baby's liver and you shouldn't give it to him/her unless he/she really needs it.

  • Carson just had his and I didn't give him any before.  I nursed him while he got the shots and he did well.  I did give him something a few hours later because he got a small fever.
