XP: Please Help - Eliminating Dairy/Soy

I need help - My DD has had a significant amount of blood in her stools (also they are green) and pedi is pretty sure its a dairy/soy allergy and wants me to eliminate it from my diet (I'm breastfeeding). She said it will take about 2 weeks to leave my system so in the meantime she wants me to pump and dump and use a hypoallergenic formula. I'm really really bummed about having to use the formula but also worried about how I'm going to do the diet. I'm vegetarian and have been for most of my life and soy and dairy are my primary protein sources. She did give me a referral for a nutritionist to help me figure out a diet that will eliminate soy/diary but still meet nutritional needs but until I can get to the appointment I need to figure out what to eat otherwise I'm going to be living on beans... I need help if anyone has any suggestions.

  • I am on the same diet (although I am not a vegetarian). I would recommend some nut butter - natural PB is safe. If you have a whole foods near, you can grind your own almond butter too. How about baked potatoes with salsa and safe cheese, pasta with marinara, rice, oatmeal, and cereal with almond or rice milk. Be sure to check out the Food Allergy board too. There are lots of girls on our diet and some are also vegetarian. PM me if I can help more!

  • Have you tried Rice milk?  It's not that bad as long as it is good and cold.  I use it at work.  I would take advantage of the nutritionist.  Also, if you go to a grocery that focuses on organic, vegan/vegetarian foods, they sometimes have someone that specializes in nutritian, and can help you find what you need.  Some of the small local stores even have classes on how to cook gluten and milk/dairy free, etc...

  • Almond milk and coconut milk are pretty tasty. From what I have heard, coconut has a lot of dairy substitutes, as well as almonds.

  • My  baby had GERD for 9 mos; he is now 13 mos. You do not need to pump and dump! Kellymom and LLL websites have some info about this. Your case might be different, but mine was pretty dire, and the GI pedi said that BM was best for baby even with the reflux. As far as diet, the rice cheese is ok. I ate a lot of meat and veggies. You do get used to it. The rice milk was ok, but I only used it in my coffee. HTH! GL!

  • I don't know how to quote, but I wanted to address Amy's idea of goat milk being similar to BM. I asked the GI pedi about this, and she said to stay away from it, that it wasn't good, nutritionally. Amy, do you have an article or reference handy? just curious.
