feel so horrible- ds massacred his face in his sleep

I feel like I am constantly cutting and filing his nails but I guess I'm not doing a good enough job. He was tossing and turning a lot last night and when he does that he sometimes digs into his face. I nursed him at 4 am, put him back down but then he started tossing and turning at 5:30. I had him lay on my chest while I sat on the recliner for a few hours. When he woke up, I saw that he had a huge bloody scratch on his face. There was also a small one near his eye.  I feel like the worst mom ever. I wiped it down with a wet cloth but do you think I should do anything else to it? I didn't see it until daylight so it had already dried.

  • Mittens?
DS's finger and toenails grow fast, too!  It's tough to trim them.  Usually I have to do it while he's asleep.  His toenails are like daggers!

  • DS has done that too, he has extremely strong and sharp nails. Many friends of mine who had midwives as opposed to OBs were told to just bite them while they were nursing. Voila, no more bloody scratches! And I've yet to get his nails too short biting them, when I filed they wouldn't get short enough and when I used clippers he is so squirmy that I cut into the quick and he bled. That made me feel like the worst mom ever.
  • DD also scratched the crap out of her face at daycare yesterday.  And when I picked her up I too felt like the worst mom ever!  The nails are so hard to cut!  We put a little Neosporin on the scratch.

  • I'm hesitant to put neosporin on it b/c his hands are in his mouth all the time. I'm afraid he'll eat it.

  • Just let it heal on its own. He will probably get the Neosporin in his mouth if you put it on there.

  • DS does this all the time no matter how often I file his nails.  Sounds crazy, but if you BF, put some breast milk on the scratches.  They heal super quick!

  • My DS does this too despite my trying to keep his nails trimmed. Usually heals up in a day or two.  :(

This!! DD does this in her sleep sometimes too, and BM seems to help heal the scratches. (and at least make them not so red!)

  • Thanks. I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one, at least.  Ds does scratch himself all the time, too, but today's was especially deep and bloody.  I will try the bm thing.

  • It will go away in a couple of days...just keep it clean.  DD did this all the time and it's calmed down a lot over the past 2 weeks.  I usually just check her nails every day to see if they need to be trimmed.  It does get easier and she is used to it since I trim at least 1-2 nails a day.

  • Yep, DS does that all the time. I have to trim his fingernails every other day and his toenails (the big ones especially) at least twice a week.

His cuts will usually heal up within a day or two... three days if it's a particularly deep cut. I don't put anything on them; just keep them clean. They don't seem to bother him at all. Odd, because those little nails hurt when he scratches me with them.

It helps to trim them when he's sleeping. He's waaay to big for it, but he still likes hanging out in his boppy. It's like his little barcalounger. He usually takes a nap laying in it which works to my advantage... it's really easy to trim his nails when he's sleeping in that position.

  • I feel like I cut DD's nails every other day!  LOL

I think the mittens are a good idea, if you're LO will tolerate them.

  • Dr. told me no mittens as DS needs to feel and learn about textures and using his fingers and hands.  I tried biting them when I breast feed and it really worked!  He likes clawing at his face too, it is tough getting those nails short and not jagged, I like to put a little soft blanky in his hands so when he goes at his face with his hands he grabs the blanky instead and pushes it into his face- puts him to sleep too :)
