I swear we are going for the record here. Every response to every thing I say is "Why?". It's not really a "challenging authority" thing, more that he just wants you to explain out the reasoning behind everything. I know that's how they learn....I guess i just thought this would be a shorter phase and I'm just hoping I don't pull my hair out first.
Ds was a very late talker so I realize we may be coming into this stage later than others. Any tips? I do try the "Why do you think?" response but it doesn't work.

Re: How many times a day does your dc say "Why?"....
We haven't hit this yet, but believe it or not, I can't wait for it! My DS was a really late talker, so we're not quite there yet. Every new speech milestone for us is such a blessing!
Lately though, he has been constantly saying the following:
"What is it? I need to know what is it!"
"Where is (insert person, friend, pet, stuffed animal here)?"
"What is (insert person, friend, etc) doing?"
and the new favorite, "What does it say?" about every single piece of writing he sees...
I'm thrilled at his speech, but I have to say sometimes I get tired of answering, especially the "I need to know what is it!" since it's often some object that I don't know the name of, like some piece on the inside of the dishwasher, some type of odd looking plant, or fictional animal in a book...
Don't have a lot of advice, but good luck! Sounds like you have a smart, curious kid!
PS. It's always nice to hear success stories about preemies who were late talkers
898238427 times a day, give or take.
Ugh! I don't think I can count that high. DS is a really bad "why-er," and his "why phase" has lasted far, far, far longer than I ever thought it would. Let's see...DD is almost 14mos old, and it started at some point mid-pg with her...yeah, it's gone on forever. <<sigh>>
I struggle with it too b/c on one hand I want to encourage him to ask questions, be curious, wonder how things work, etc., but on the other hand, for crying out loud...You just said that you were hot, so why are you asking me WHY I'm taking your jacket off.
Can you tell I'm a little frustrated too? It has gotten a little better though. I just try to answer the genuine questions as best as I can (in some cases having to say that IDK), and for the questions that are just asinine and just for the heck of asking why, I try to get him to come up with the answer himself and tell me why.
eleventy-billion ... I've counted.
Some days I just cannot handle the battery of questions that come out of DD's mouth.
We also get the one "where did this come from?" in reference to every food item that lands in front of him. Sheesh.
And when the "why do you think" doesn't work one last time, sometimes I look at him in frustration after just one more "Why?" and say "Z !!" to which sometimes he gets it and gives me a break, and sometimes I get "Why Z, mommy?"
Gotta love it...
a million!!!!
but its ok - i dont mind answering

You've got a deal...It would be totally worth it to have a nap all by myself. Of course, if I actually had the opportunity, I probably wouldn't know what to do with the time to myself and wouldn't be able to sleep, but I'll take that scenario as a problem.
