Are you just going to work until you go into labor, or do you plan on leaving work on a certain date? My boss wanted to know when I was going to stop working. I had planned to just work until I delivered, because I know that it could happen whenever. I don't want to start using my maternity leave until my baby is actually here. I plan on taking 6-8 weeks off for it. I know as it gets closer, and I get bigger (and more uncomfortable) that I'll want to stop working sooner but unless the doctors tell me to, I'm going to try to work as long as possible.
Re: Last Day of Work?
I am self employed, and will basically work until the birth. I was thinking of taking december off (im due dec 15th) and then start back in January.
My husband is also self employed, and our careers are really important to us, so we will both work right after and take care of the baby together and take turns when we need to.
6-8 weeks isn't very long for maternity leave, by federal law you get 12 weeks off (unless you work for a small business) You can start that 12 weeks before you have the baby though. I plan on working until I deliver, but I also plan on taking the full 12 weeks plus my vacation time I have saved. But, if I was only going to take 6 to 8 weeks off afterwards like you, I would definately considering taking time off before baby was born.
I went out early on bedrest with my son at 36w5d with pre-E (induced at 38w1d) so with this one being due on 12-25, and being delivered at around 38 weeks again (12-9th to the 16th-ish), I plan to make my last day Friday, December 2nd.
Make sure you check with your employer on this. FMLA guarantees you a maximum of 12 weeks of job protection for you to recuperate, care for a relative (in this case a baby), etc. Many employers require you to use your vacation time as part of this leave - meaning the paid time and FMLA would be concurrent and you'd still only have a max of 12 weeks.

Well I'm due Dec 1st, 19 weeks tomorrow, so I've been humming and hawing about when to start my time off. Luckily for me, I get one year of paid Mat Leave and I'm taking every day of it. My mother has already booked a flight from Australia to little Grande Prairie, Alberta for Nov 24th. I figure I may have a good chance of having my baby early, as the LO is growing fast and family history says it may be even more likely to happen early. I plan on attending my technical training for 4th year HD mechanics from Aug 30 until Oct 21, so I'm thinking by mid Nov. calling it quits. Take my time to have everything ready being as this is my 1st. And to be prepared to possibly have LO sooner then later. Farther from Christmas the better.
Due Dec 2.
I'm planning to take a week of vacation the week of Thanksgiving. My last day will be November 18.
I get 2 weeks of paid leave before the baby arrives, and 8 weeks after the baby arrives, I will be taking advantage of that. I won't take 12 weeks off because I am only paid for 8 after LO arrives. Unfortunately we need my paycheck so that's where we stand.
With DS I worked up to the day I delivered. I was two weeks early so it's not like there was a lot of planning involved.
Regarding taking maternity leave early, it depends. To be able to take SDI (disability) early, my doctor would have to give me a note of sorts not to work. Or I could use vacation or not take pay. I'm thinking of take the week before my c-section off but I'm not sure.
As previous poster said, yes, you get 12 weeks off via FMLA but that only protects your job, doesn't pay you. If your state has disability, you get 6 weeks at about 50% pay for vaginal delivery and 8 weeks for c-section. IF you need to take off before that's additional. I believe you get up to 12 weeks of SDI payments in a rotating calendar year.
