we're at my parents' right now and they live about 0.5 miles from where the city does their annual fireworks show so we usually watch it from their back yard. my dilemma is in the timing of it all. Miss A usually goes to bed at 8:30pm but the fireworks show is from 9-9:30pm.
last year, I put her to bed and then woke her up for the show and she seemed ok with it all. this year, I worry that if I keep her up all night until 9:30 it'll be 9:45-10pm by the time she actually falls asleep... but I am also concerned that if I put her to bed and wake her up for the show, she may be miss cranky pants. so what do you think I should do?
Re: 4th of July - WWYD?
yeah I think she'd enjoy them b/c she seemed to like them last year when she barely knew what was going on (though I guess there's a chance they could scare her this year). I don't think keeping her up will be an issue, I just worry about her not getting enough rest if I keep her up....

**fingers crossed** she will be okay since it would just be this one time. Could she sleep in a little tomorrow? We keep Ashton up for special occasions and he is always fine (and on schedule) the next morning. Let us know what you decide to do:)
ha! i wish she would sleep in
but I don't control that... I never wake her up unless I have to go to work and need to nurse her before I leave (since I don't pump anymore). unfortunately, when she stays up late she still wakes up at the same time the following day so it's just lost sleep.... but I guess you are right in that it is only one day and she will be just fine

Actually, we did fireworks tonight. We kept him up until about 9:45pm (bedtime is usually by 8:45pm) and he LOVED it. We were kinda lucky and he went down for a nap (he was fussing for one) around 6-7:30pm so he was not cranky at all for the fireworks. I guess if you are able to push back her afternoon nap a bit later (usually B naps either once mid-day for 2-3 hours or twice--one around noon and another around 5-6pm) then staying up a bit longer just for one night won't be too bad. GL and hope it works out!
Btw, Happy 4th, everyone!
My initial thought was to put A bed and hope she slept through the noise, then if she woke up, bring her out.
However, reading some of the other answers it seems like babies like fireworks. It never even occured to me that they would? If A really likes it, play her sleep by ear. If she's really sleepy put her down, if she's doing alright, just keep her up.
Happy 4th of July!!

yeah, last year she seemed to like the bright lights
this year I know she will like them but I'm also worried she might be frightened by the loud booming noises.... but, she also likes to say "boom!" and kick her feet when she is sitting down so I'm hoping I can play it off and say "boom!" every time they shoot them off so she thinks it's fun vs scary (kind of like how I try to make thunder seem fun too)
I like your idea of seeing how she does and just playing it by ear, esp since others seem to report that their LOs did ok w/the later bedtime

how did she do? I think we talked about this last year too since it's a similar situation for us - city show is probably .25 miles or less from us in a valley below our neighborhood. I put J to bed at 7ish like usual. He's usually pretty adaptable in terms of modifying bedtime etc.
We had a party at our house and between people going in to use the restroom and illegal fireworks going off out and about he woke up around 9:30 so I just got him dressed for fireworks and brought him outside. I'm glad he was awake and I was holding him when the show started at 10:15 because there were 2 very loud booms that scared him pretty bad, I'm sure they would have woken him up regardless and I'm glad I was holding him so I could immediately start in with wow, pretty, look at that...
He quickly started to enjoy it.
eta, J is still sleeping... he likes to get his 12hrs in regardless!
wow your city does the show at 10:15?! that is so late! I just kept her up for the show and while she wasn't Miss Cranky Pants she was definitely tired and kept leaning her head on my chest and asked to go inside several times. she enjoyed the fireworks, though, and kept saying "thunder" LOL
you're lucky that J sleeps 12 hrs regardless....Miss A wakes up the same time no matter what!

the sun sets here about an hour later than say SoCal - even though we are in the same time zone we are more west (and north makes a difference to I think??) enough for it to make a pretty considerable difference in the summer.
But even with that, I think they could still probably start it closer to 9:45 and be ok
