Dx w/ Gestational Diabetes- I need some ideas for breakfast!

I have gestational diabetes and am getting sick and tired of eggs! I'm a tea and toast or oatmeal kind of girl usually, but obviously thats not gonna work in this case! The doc says eat proteins, but I don't really care for eggs. Besides, it can't be healthy for me to eat them every day :( I don't like eating a "heavy" breakfast, just makes me nauseous. i have the rest of my days eating down, just wondering if any of you ladies had/have GD and have any good breakfast ideas.

  • My first thought is Greek yogurt.  There are a lot of brands that make nonfat versions either plain or flavors.  None of them are too sweet and they all have at least 10g of protein per serving.

  • Can you eat regular (steel cut, not instant) oatmeal? Add a little sugar free flavored coffee creamer or some vanilla protien powder?
  • I know you can use agave syrup instead of maple as it won't spike your blood sugar - that would be good on steelcut oatmeal (or anything else).
  • I disnt have gd. But I often eat a small turkey sandwich for breakfast. I just feel better if I eat protein. It doesn't bother me that it's not "breakfasty".

  • Thanks girls! I don't do so well on oats...My "problem sugar" is my overnight fasting. So for that reason per the doc, I have to do very low carbs and dairy and no fruits ect in the morning and last snack. I was surprised to find...or maybe my research wasnt up to par..that there aren't many websites on GD and recipes.

I'll do anything to keep my baby healthy and safe so eggs, pb, and other icky foods it is! blech!

But a turkey sandwich does sound good right about now!

If you can't even have bread at breakfast, you can roll up a piece of cheese in some turkey or ham and make it like a turkey burrito.  I know it sounds weird.  But once you start eating non breakfast food for breakfast you might be hooked!  :)  I"m much more likely to eat cereal for dessert at night than for breakfast.  I'm weird.

  • I vaguely remember one of the nutrition talks at Evergreen mentioning that cottage cheese has a lot of protein so you might look into that.

  • I had GD while pregnant as well.  Are you able to visit a nutritionist?  Mine was able to help me come up with a very personalized daily meal plan and I actually lost weight while pregnant - and W was healthy and happy when born.

I found that weight, now that I'm not being careful about carbs whatsoever.

My go to breakfast was whole wheat toast (1 slice), 1 tb peanut butter and 2 turkey sausages.
