Getting your kid to wear a life jacket

Any tips to get my 3 year old to wear one?  It's to the point where he doesn't want to go to the lake/river with the family because he doesn't want to wear one.  That's okay for now because I have my Mom to watch him at home, but she leaves in a couple of weeks.

He takes a bit to get used to new things, so I thought I'd have him wear it at home first, etc. & that didn't work at all.  :(

He loves the water and is fearless when it comes to it so it's really important that he wears the life jacket, even though I'm a maniac about watching him.

TIA!

  • At that age I did a lot of bribing :-/

  • Ugh, he's so stubborn that usually bribing doesn't work.  I'm going to try it again though, you never know!

  • What kind of lifejacket do you have?  DS hated his traditional lifejacket with a passion but has no problem wearing his puddle jumper.  It works really well too, at his preschool they all swim in the summer and he's all over the pool - deep end (gulp), jumping in, etc. easily and safely.  It is coast guard approved although I think that I would want DS to wear something higher rated for actually being on a boat.  It's great for wearing in and around pools and lakes.

     Got mine at wal-mart, https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003648OQY/ref=pd_lpo_k2_dp_sr_1?pf_rd_p=486539851&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B0019BSYXE&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=13CAPH436PBZD4E8RAPX

In that case if it's something important I bribe with something big and irresistible! ;)

This is exactly what I was gonna say- and this is what my DS wears on the boat.

In some states (not SC though), the Puddle Jumper isn't sufficient for use on a boat by law. It is a type V PFD and some states only allow type I, II, & III.
  • The way we got Nathan to put on his Puddle Jumper at the pool on Monday was to call it Iron Man armor.  He was stoked to put it on.
