For those of you with staircases indoors...
Do you gate both the top and bottom?
Which gates do you use? (Links or Brand/Models appreciated)...TIA!
Also, if you have a loft/catwalk in a second-story home...do you use banister guards? If so, which ones did you buy/install?
Re: Speaking of stairs and safety...
we have steep, narrow stairs to the basement. The top landing is a small entryway to the backdoor with doorways to both the living area and master BR.
We have this one at the top. https://www.amazon.com/Summer-Infant-Secure-Extra-Walk-Thru/dp/B0000DEW91/ref=pd_sim_ba_3
Because there is a lip at the top sides and door way molding to install it between I didn't need to worry about hardware mounting. We really like it - it's pretty tall and very secure using the tension mount.
We didn't put anything at the bottom - there is a door at the bottom that we close when we are down there and we really only use that room as a playroom so we are always supervising.
We live in a four-level split-level. We only have the main area's (the living room, dining room, and kitchen level) staircase gated. We have this:

It works really well for a split-level since it blocks both the up and down stairs at the same time with only one gate. Also, I can bring a load of laundry from the upstairs all the way to the basement laundry room without using any gates. You only need to open the gate to access that level, not if you're going past that level (I hope that makes sense!)
In the basement (family room) level, we have a chunk of the room gated off with two of those same gates to make a play area, so there's no need for a staircase gate there. On the bedroom level (where his bedroom is), we have not gated it yet. We probably will at some point, but as of now he would never be without an adult right there with him on that level unless he was in his room with the door closed (or in his crib). The top level (the master) has a door at the top of the staircase that we keep closed whenever he's up there with us (when we get ready in the morning, etc.).
We did top only, but it's b/c the bottom is weird and we've have to buy special stuff to do it. The bottom is in the foyer, and we have that gated off to the living room, and there's a door on the other side we close to keep him from getting to the stairs.
We use this one at the top.
Same here. We only had one downstairs because she was a big climber and we were never really upstairs either. Even though it's technically not needed anymore, we still have it up to keep the dog downstairs while we are at work
We have this one because you can either use it as a top of stairs (drill & mount to wall) or as a pressure gate, and we like the flexibility for the price: https://www.amazon.com/Regalo-Easy-Step-Walk-White/dp/B001OC5UMQ
We currently have one for the top of one set of stairs and we need to get another one of the top of our second set of stairs. Our bottom of the stairs is blocked off with a big heavy bin because it's next to the front door, which we need to block access to since he unlocks and opens it and the baby gate doesn't work there (the access opening to that area is between a wall and a sofa and we can't mount anything on the sofa).
