NBR: Vacation/Sick Days Nosy Poll

How many vacation and sick days do you get a year? Are they designated sick and vacation or from the same pool?

I get 15 days and it's combined sick and vacation. I could technically never be sick and take 15 vacation days but if I take all of my vacation by Jan 1st (it doesn't carry over), and get sick in December, I'm screwed and get docked pay.

(I ask this b/c we might be on a reality tv show but now I don't want to do it b/c I'd have to take 5 days off. One of my co-workers can't understand why I don't want to and thinks 15 days combined is reasonable. And then when I said yeah but being pregnant, who knows how I'll feel at the end. Plus, I want to save as many days towards my maternity leave... and then she said, yeah you get 4 weeks off for that so that's like vacation...really?!)

Same here. For now anyway. Once I'm with my employer for a year I get 7 days.

Being on a show is VERY tempting though. I'd keep the days for myself after the baby. Seems more logical.

  • We get 10 days vacation plus 3 floating holidays to use whenever we choose. (I'm using one today!)

Then we have sick time that we earn every so many days we work. I haven't had to use any of my vacation time yet and I've just been using sick time for my doctors appointments or for the day I had my migraine.

I'm hoping to not have to use any of my vacation time until right before my due date and get paid for that time and take an extra long maternity leave. (I get 6 weeks maternity leave at 60% paid) But, they allow us 12 weeks for maternity leave which I'm definitely taking.

I also get an hourly wage so I can always make up hours if I'd like to.

I can't really say but it involves our dog. :)

You know, it's kind of weird, but we haven't really discussed vacation days since I was hired as an attorney five years ago (after working for a year and a half as a law clerk). When I started, I was given 10 sick/vacation days, although I think the current policy is that we attorneys can do whatever we want as long as we get our hours in. We have a pretty laid back office, to say the least.

  • I get 18 vacation days a year after being with my company for over 4 years.  I also get "unlimited" sick time, but if you take more than 4 days off in a row sick you have to provide doctor verification.

Our company was just bought out and my sick/vacation time is actually LESS than it was before, but I still feel like for an American company it is generous.

And yeah, what show?!?!  Now we are the ones being nosy ;)

Laid back is good! My boss is a woman and she is HUGE on family and so she's very forgiving about any time I need off. It has never been a issue. Which is so nice!

  • 3 weeks paid vacation, 3 sick days, 3 personal days, and 2 floating holidays.

  • I get 10 vacation days and I'm not sure about sick days, I've called in 3 times over the past year and I was paid for all of those days.

  • My company is pretty good with time off, although finding the time to take all the days in a year (they don't carry over) can be difficult.  Since I've been with the same company for a few years, I get the following:

    20 vacation days

    3 personal days

    6 sick days

I work in a male dominated field, so there are not many women having babies at my company.  Another perk they give is that they give us two full weeks off before our due date, I don't need to use any vacation / personal days for it.  I'm actually having trouble finding the time to take all my vacation days this year, and I really wish I could use them in '12 to add two weeks to my maternity leave.  Oh well, maybe I'll just work four day weeks for all of Oct and Nov!

  • I teach at a public school and I get 5 state days.  My district gives another 5 local days.  They can be used however you want, but generally, we can't take more than 2 days in row without permission.  We don't get any paid maternity leave though.
  • I'm in grad school and basically taking any time off, other than for life and death reasons, is very frowned upon in my department. When I had my miscarriage I took one day off, then dragged my behind back in to deal with a bunch of bratty undergrads and professors who were fairly unsympathetic. Yet another reason why I think I will just take my masters and leave after fall semester.

I get 4 weeks vacation, a floating holiday and 5 sick days (that can be used for me or baby).  And, I can work from home if needed, that's pretty nice!

Granted, I've been with the company for 12 years - you start with 2 weeks after a year of service.

  • My vacation/sick pay is not so good!  I get 3 hours each pay period, so 6 per month.  I have to "earn" them.  The good thing is they do carry over to the next year.  It's fine as long as I have time to plan really well.  My husband on the other hand, gets 21 PTO days per year which I'm really jealous about.

  • I guess I'm really lucky.  We get the following per year:

    22 vacation days

12 sick (5 of which can be unverified) days

You can't carry over more than 22 vacation days, but sick time is unlimited.  And you accrue monthly, which is nice.  Hopefully I'll get a dr's note for 8 weeks regardless of delivery type, which I will use my sick time for, then take 4 weeks of vacay to make up my 12 weeks of FMLA.

  • I have been at my company for 5 years.  We get PTO (paid time off) only, no sick time on top of it.  Because of my time with the company I get 4.5 weeks PTO and 6 paid Holidays a year.  It is very lucrative for an American medical company considering we are open 365 days a year from 6am-12am everyday.

  • I'm a teacher, so besides school holidays I don't get any "vacation" days. On the other hand, we follow Turkish (ie muslum) holidays plus traditional western holidays, so I get a bunch of holidays during the year.

We get 10 sick days per year that can accumulate up to 30 days, but they can't be tacked on to my maternity leave. Now that I know that, I'm thinking I should have been taking more sick days all along - 3 in the past 4 years. I've actually lost sick days :)

Plus we get 2 personal days that are meant to be used for business (ie passport renewal, moving, etc). These also can't be tacked onto maternity, or a vacation for that matter.

  • I accrue 14 hours vacation and 8 hours of sick leave per month...it works out to be 21 vacation days and 8 sick days a year, plus I get 14 paid holidays.

  • 19 days annual leave (vacation), 2 floating holidays, 5 sick days a year.  AL will increase up to 21 days a year and 6 sick days (plus standard 2 floating holdiays) when I hit the 3 year anniversary mark.  But since June 1 was my 2 year anniversary, that will be a ways away.

We get 6-8 weeks of NYS short-term disability for maternity leave (6 vaginal birth, 8 c-section).  It's advertised that NYS short-term disability pays up to 60% of your gross pay a week - but that is capped at a maximum of $170.00 / week.  We can't survive on that.  So I'm saving my annual leave to supplement my income during maternity leave.  Good thing I found this out early, or we would have been screwed.

Edited to add: We also get 11 paid holidays a year, at a minimum.  The last two years, our employer has given a full 10 days paid leave and closed the agency from about Dec 23 through Dec 31st.  So if they do that again, it's more like 18 paid holidays a year.
