Funny, we were just talking about this! I was saying it sucks that the kids don't get to catch lightning bugs like we did when we were kids back in the midwest. We loved doing that as kids.

I saw them all the time growing up in CT. I loved those little moving lights. Damn, now you've reminded me of one of the only things I miss about living there.
First time I saw them was in CT when I was in college.
Growing up I was also always confused when reading about jumping in piles of leaves - the trees out here don't those their leaves. There were a lot fewer decidious trees near my parents house than even here on the east side of the sound, which is nothing compared to New England.
Ha! I was just talking about them with a friend in Chicago this past week!

Yeah I bet we spent 10,000 hours catching lightning bugs in jars!
Oh, definitely! Poor bugs trapped in jars, with no holes, and handfuls of grass. We never knew what they ate so we assumed it was grass. Either that, or we were even more cruel. If you step on them and smear it with your shoe, they leave a glowing streak for a few minutes. Probably best for the bugs that my kids won't have much experience, except for when we're in IL. :-)

And we snapped off their glow part and put them on our fingers as "wedding rings".
We saw them for the first time camping in Minnesota. DH was so cute when he asked if they were lightning bugs, he sound like a little kid! It was an awesome sight!!
Re: Lightning bugs?
that's so sad!!!
they are awesome! I guess this means we'll have to - gasp - visit the ILs in the summer some year. sigh.....
I hadn't either until we moved here to MI. They are pretty cool.
I've seen them!! ... when we visited the in laws in Ohio!
