Pregnant after 35

Intro! (and age vent re: comments from others before or while you were TTC or announced you were PG

I'm 35 (will be 36 when LO arrives) and this is my first pregnancy.  If you're my age or "better" (I hate using the word older, LOL) did you ever have others comment on your age, things like "you better hurry up!" or "it's about time!" Confused

Can't count how many times I have wanted to smack those idiots into next year.

Here's to a "happy, healthy, 35+ is the new 20" pregnancy and birth for all!

Welcome and congrats!  I am 36 and will be when LO arrives and this is also my first pregnancy.  I can relate to your frustration with all the "age" comments b/c I got them, too!  It's really annoying and just plain rude!  Most of the comments came from my own family which irritated me even more!  I just got to a point where I just ignore any of those kinds of comments b/c it's not worth getting angry about anymore.  I'm too excited about my LO to care at this point.  Just be happy and focus on having a H&H 9 months!!

  • I'm 35, but will be 36 before LO is born.  I get the opposite... "Don't you think you have enough?!" or "You're REALLY done now, right?!" or "What are you going to do with ALL those kids?!" Hmm
  • People will always find something to comment about.  I turned 37 in April and am about to deliver my first baby. Yes, I get some unpleasant comments as well, but I just try to ignore them.

Congrats and welcome!  I am 37 and a newlywed and before my DH and I got married (in March) people were already applying the pressure aabout having kids and how old we are (hubs just turned 41 in June) it is annoying but I just ignore the rudeness.

    Here's to a happy, healthy 9 months!

  • Welcome and congratulations to you and your pending LO! I am 38, expecting #3. Although I didn't get the "hurry up" comments for my first two (I had my girls at 26 and 30), I AM getting the "Wow, how old are you?" comments, which are pretty poopy! I usually let them know that family planning isn't what it used to be. More than half of my friend have had or are planning to have babies beyond their mid thirties and into their 40's. I'd say we're more the 'norm' than ever before! Enjoy your pregnancy and wonderful to meet you!

  • I don't get the age comments (I am 38 years old). I get the "you're having another one?" or "was it an accident?" or "aaaawwwww, I'm sorry!" when they find out it is going to be a boy instead of a girl.

People just need to learn how to use their filters a bit more. I get that most of this stuff is just human nature, but keep it in your head and don't say it out loud :)

Oh yeah I get that too except it is "Don't you know where babies come from?" I have 4 already. Or it is "Will this be your last?"  I think I'm going to start telling people that "I'm trying to help the economy by having another kid." Just to see what they say.

  • Hi, welcome, and congratulations!  :)

I'm currently 43.  When I was 34, I had just broken up with someone who was really awful for me and with whom I had had a number of losses, I had a bunch of career decisions going on, and I was trying really hard to get out of debt.  My GYN at that time, who until that point I liked, told me "You'd better hurry if you want kids."  Dude.

I switched doctors, and met someone fabulous at 38.  I guess the fates were waiting until the time was really right.

  • Thanks for all your replies, ladies!  Wow, it really is amazing just how rude some people can be about age, and nice to know I'm not alone in receiving such silly comments.  I liked to point out to the commenter that my MIL and my GIL both had their youngest babies at 38 and 42 respectively.  That use to shut them up.  For the ones that now say "it's about time" I just politely change the subject and silently remind myself that it's their own insecurities about their age that makes them uncomfortable with the idea of trying to/having children at my age.

I actually once had a woman I had just met tell me (before DH and I were even engaged!) "better hurry up, or your eggs will die".  I almost had to laugh but managed to just shrug and say that I wasn't worried, whatever will be will be.  Some people though, 'eh?

I hope you all have wonderful, healthy happy PG's and labor healthy, happy full term babies!

We conceived DS on or around my 35th birthday and up until that point my mom loved saying, "you're not getting any younger!"
  • Welcome! Big Smile You'll just love this group of awesome ladies...I know I do!  I may be ever so slightly biased though since I'm in this group too.  hehe.  Kidding...kidding.

I didn't get too many comments on my age. (knock on wood)  I just turned 35 & am expecting my 1st around Sept 1st.  Just one from my g'ma after she found out my wedding date (I just got married just over a year ago).  She gave me "9 months and 1 day after that" to have my first kiddo.  Lol!  She's spunky though & it was all I could do to not just die laughing.  (She wasn't doing well though at the time & we weren't sure she'd be around much longer.  She's still here though...too stubborn to go when she doesn't want to we think... and she even knitted me a baby cap.)

I can so empathize with the ladies that are getting bothersome comments...that would be frustrating.  Later on when (Lord willing) we have more kids, I'm planning on wearing a tshirt I found online... "We're just trying to outnumber the idiots" to stop stupid comments. Stick out tongue  Unfortunately stupid comments will still come...I'm expecting insane comments when we are actually holding our LOs.  I'm gonna just stick to the mantra 'I'm a nanny...I got this...thanks" when that happens.

  • I had been told since I was 19 that I wouldn't be able to have a child w/o IVF. It was a surprise to my family and my self that at 36 I got pregnant naturally and unexpectedly. Had Mr. B 22 days after I turned 37. At 38 I am pregnant w/ baby #2 and the only time I have heard any thing about my age was from my doctor. There is a genetic test (I can't remember what it's called) He said because of my age it will come up positive but he wouldn't worry at this point since my first child is ok.

I am sorry if you have received or are getting flack don't let it get to you be proud of the miracle you are growing! Besides the best things get better with age!

This is more like what I get. I said to my doctor about being older (Im 38) and he more or less just said 'pffft" its not old these days. I love my Dr :)

My family and friends are more concerned as they dont like my partner.... thats a whole other story though

  • Amazingly, no one has ever made a single comment about my age during either pregnancy (granted no one really knows about this one yet) but it is very common in my neck of the woods for mothers to be over 35.

Just ignore the comments. Who really cares what anyone says or thinks about YOUR pregnancy?

  • I get more comments about having a 13 year old and one on the way than I do about being 38.  Guess it makes for a good distraction. lol.  My response?  It's like having 2 only children.

The same here - since I've had kids (who are now all adults) I'm getting the "was this planned" instead of "congratulations!"
