NBR: car insurance

what company do you go with? And if you're in the buffalo area and have an agent you can recommend.

We have AllState, and I'm getting fed up... they keep raising our rates, and it's not even because of tickets/accidents. Both DH and I have clean driving records. The first time it was because we lost our "good payer" discount (from canceling auto-pay because I lost my debit card and had to give them a new #. The lady who took my info never reinstated the auto pay, and just did a one time payment. So the next month I just paid online through my bank. My agent told me that doesn't count, and that we have to wait a year to get the discount back!) Now the rate was just raised again for some bs reason he gave DH about the policy terms and conditions. We are paying almost $200/month for auto and home, and that seems way high to me.

Re: NBR: car insurance

  • I go with Geico, I don't have an agent...I did it all online

  • I have allstate too.. and our home is through them too, but its a separate policy and gets paid with our mortgage, so I don't know how much per month it is.. but our auto for 2 cars is like $117.. which I don't think is so bad, although it did go up a little in the past year. I won't switch though because I really like our agent.. they're always really easy to deal with.

We use State Farm. Our car payment each month is less than  $100, and I'm not completely sure of the actual payment for our home ins because that gets paid through our mortgage escrow account. I do know that both together are less than $200, but we have older cars and a small house.
  • That does sound high, depends on your house size and cars though. We have Geico for both, they saved us close to $500 a year when we switched. Our home is paid through mortgage/escrow like pp's mentioned but I know it isn't high. Our cars are a little under $100 a month combined.....neither are new but both carry collision.

  • okay, now that you girls mention it, our homeowners is paid through escrow too. So that means I'm paying $200 for just car insurance! That is ridiculous! I just got a quote from Progressive, and it was $160/month. I'm going to have to shop around a little more.
  • 1st tip is don't use geico they are the absolute worst if you are injured in an accident. We had allstate and also were fed up with them...and now we have state farm. I get that monthly charges are important but your actual coverage is what you should be thinking about. It is so important to have good coverage and SUM coverage as well- if you don't have that a moron with 25k policy can hit you and if you are severely injured all you will get is 25k. Period. SUM coverage will make sure you are insured. If you have any specific questions I can ask my DH... He deals with this every day. We are extremely insured with cars/home/life and it isn't as much as you would think. I would much rather make cuts elsewhere in the budget to afford good insurance. ESP with being a homeowner and parent.

Hm, I have heard nothing but good about them! I had a claim ( vehicle damage, not personal injury) and they were top notch! Much better than anything I had through Allstate. Maybe the difference is that is wasn't an injury?

  • Yes. They pay millions to shady doctors to fly in from NYC to examine the injured people. 100% of time they cut them off from treatment which causes a nightmare in medical bills or the inability to see doctors at all in some cases if your personal insurance knows about the accident and thinks your insurance should pay. They leave their clients high and dry. They would rather pay their lawyers $10,000 in legal fees to fight a bill for $10.
