Good first tri screen results - amnio?

I just got back my results which gave me a 1/1200 risk of Downs and 1/2200 risk of trisomy 13/18 which is a great improvement over my age based risk of 1/75. (age 40.5).   I'm happy but I feel that with an amnio I can really be 100% worry free.  I'm kind of wishing I'd done CVS early on and gotten all this over with.    Are the risks of an amnio worth the peace of mind in my case?

I don't really have any advice for you - it will be interesting to see what others answer.  My results were also very good so I chose not to go forward with any more testing.

My specialist was on board with this decision but when I saw my MD she made me a bit more nervous by reminding me that the "tests are not diagnostic", etc...I think she is just a bit more conscious of being sued, making sure I'm fully informed, etc...

I'm still not getting anymore tests done, though.

I was in your same shoes. And in my opinion....YES the amnio was soooo worth it. I had decent numbers on the NT screen but still finally decided to go ahead with the amnio. I'm SOOOO glad I did!! This board really helped me to make my decision. And honestly, the amnio is so easy. Took all of 30 seconds, doc was amazing (he has never had a single m/c due to amnio), and results in 5 days. Good luck on your decision. I know for me, the peace of mind was/is fantastic.

    Those are kickass numbers!

We opted for the amnio after Margaux' NT scan, and we skipped the nT altogether with this one because it just doesn't give solid answers, and that made me crazy.  I have no regrets!

those numbers are GREAT!!  they lowered your risk...

My advice is.. (what genetic counselor told me) if you're the type of person that NEEDS to know.. then do it for the peace of mind... but if you would be okay with those fabulous results and what your DR tells you... then don't.  I did a CVS with both pregnancies b/c my risk was elevated both times... which kind of freaked me out.  Other advice.. as PP said.. go to someone who has performed a gazillion amnios.. tons of experience... you'll feel more comfortable and you have every right to ask them what their mc rate is.

With numbers that good, I would not take the risk.

My Dr. and I just had this discussion yesterday.  I told him I am completely freaked out about an amnio--the fact that it has any risk (no matter how slight) of miscarriage.  I had two previous early losses and I know someone who had complications from an amnio and ended up losing her baby.  I'm not sure I'm prepared to take any risk since I've never made it this far into a pregnancy before.  DH and I have been discussing it and haven't made a final decision yet, but we're leaning towards skipping the amnio.

I just went through this same exact process, and we decided not to get the amnio.  My initial screen numbers were pretty good, and they were not as early as yours, OP.  I had an early loss, and I just did not feel comfortable with the risks involved with amnio, especially when the n/t scan was so positive.  We did opt for the 16-week blood work, the results of which just came back today, which really confirmed our decision.

I think that whether to get amnio/cvs is such a personal decision, and it's so hard to give advice on this.  One thing I would recommend is to really think about what you plan on doing with the results.  That, for me, was the biggest factor - I did not plan on terminating, unless there was a nasty Trisomy, and there were simply no indicators that those would be an issue with my baby.  The rest, for me, is just the uncertainty that comes with being a parent.  However, it took me a LONG TIME to come to this conclusion and I actually didn't cancel my amnio appointment until a few days before hand (we had been grappling with this for a full month).

Good luck with your decision - I know you will do what you feel is right for you.

Thanks for all the advice...I'm still contemplating what to do.  I might wait to see what the 2nd trimester screen results are and then decide..though that is pushing it pretty late.  If I do an amnio I'd want to do it as early as possible.

I wouldn't with those results, but it's a personal choice.

It sounds like your "risk" is as low as a healthy mid-20 year old! So, in that case it almost seems like you're in a good place! Of course, it'll come down to what you need/want to do, but thought I'd share that info! I would be the same as you though I am sure.

    GL!
