Bottle recs?

I'm trying to register (as I've changed a million things 5 times so far this weekend!), and we know we have to pick out bottles.  I originally picked out Dr. Brown, but my sister said that she's heard that people don't like how many pieces there are.  Baby Bargains recs Advent and Dr. Brown-any personal recommendations?

Thank you ladies!  Big Smile

Re: Bottle recs?

  • We used Avent for the first few weeks and hated them. If you didn't get the cap screwed on just right, it leaked everywhere. Not fun at 3am when you are barely functioning.

We then switched to Dr. Brown's and never looked back. The small parts don't bother me, and we hand wash them. I HATE having any dirty bottles around, so I just wash them immediately after eating and it's less tedious for me than washing them all at once later in the day. Some people like having a ton of bottles, but we have always just owned 7 bottles, and it's been fine for us.

We tried just about every type of bottle just because.  DDs weren't picky and my favorites were these Gerber cheapies.  They come both with silicone or latex nipples.  One of my DDs seemed to do best with the latex nipples from the NICU so we just reused those forever. :-)  Some people say don't go with small bottles, but my DDs didn't really do more than 5oz at a time so these were fine.  One of my DDs was a spit up queen so everyone recommended Dr. Browns.  However, she seemed to spit up even more with Dr. Browns than our basic bottles.  Definitely not worth the extra parts in my book!

I used Avent for daycare just because the bottle seemed more "together".  They would leak if they weren't put together correctly, but from what I've heard they may have fixed that.

When you're registering, don't forget some type of bottle rack.  We have this one and it has worked great.  It's starting to fall apart some now, but we've used it a ton because even if you wash the bottles in the dishwasher, they generally don't dry completely.  We still use ours for sippy cups and have colllapsed it and taken it on several trips.

  • we used Avent for DS1 and they leaked all the time- HATED them.

But we wanted an air-vent system... without the 200 parts of Dr. Browns...

and we got the MAM bottles and LOVED them. Very easy to clean/put together... babies loved them... worked great re: air vent... and they are cute :)

ETA:   they also come in 2 colors (for boys... i think there are 2 girl colors, too) which makes it nice so you can assign each baby a color.  Gray was blue and Gibby was green... even my older son who was 2y/o figured it out and always knew who's bottle was who that way - another bonus.

  • We use Born Free bottles and love them!

We also have tried Avent and Dr. Browns. Avent leaked all the time and Dr. Browns had too many pieces and I just didn't like them as much as born free.

  • We have Tommee Tippee bottles and I love them!  They have little formula containers than go insidev the bottle for travel...amazing!  they are sold seperately.

We use Dr. Brown's and the pieces and parts aren't an issue at all.  We put it all in dishwasher baskets and, it takes about 5 minutes to get it all set up in the AM.  We make a day's worth of bottles at once, and have them all in the fridge.

We had used the cheapy Evenflo bottles before that.  I liked that they were glass but they leaked terribly and it was difficult to tell if they were venting properly.  Dr. Brown's makes it pretty foolproof to know that the vent system is working.

  • This is something I am torn on too, as we used the medela bottles with DS#1, and then the playtex drop ins when he got older.  I thought both were fine, but a LC that I spoke with highly recommended Dr. Brown bottles with the preemie flow nipples if planning to BF b/c of the flow.  I posted a question here asking about all the parts with the Dr. Brown bottles a few weeks ago and ~8 people responded said that they weren't that bad & they just put the parts in the dishwasher (some used the munchkin baskets, as the Dr. Brown baskets only hold parts for 3 bottles).

So **I think** we will go ahead and get the Dr. Brown bottles (~ 15 bottles) for the early phase (people also recommended skipping the 4 oz & going straight to the 8 oz) but once we need the larger size I will just go back to the playtex drop-ins.  I will be curious to see what the majority of people respond with :)

  • We used primarily Dr. Brown's because the bottle fit right onto the Medela pump.  We also had the Avent ones too but my DS could unscrew the tops and milk would go everywhere.    I also suggest just getting the 8 oz bottles, I think the 4 oz ones are a waste.
