Hi moms! Glad to have found this board. I have a 2 year old DS who first started showing allergic symptoms 7 months ago (hives and eczema). There was constant eczema and rash on face and bottom to which we finally traced first to fruit juices and then to apples/apple products. We were told it was just oral allergy syndrome but I knew there was something else. A skin test at the pediatric allergist confirmed apples but we also got a positive reaction to chocolate_this one may have been false but we haven't had a good window to check. Three days into a new school and he had a reaction that covered his face, chest and entire diaper area. I'm talking fire truck red/torched and itching like crazy. He had neither fruit juice, apples, or chocolate...what now??
We talked to PA and started eliminating things and came up with red dye 40 (mainly bc of co-worker hearing my story). Needless to say, we've figure out this week that it's all red dye. DS is an extremely picky eater. I provide all of his food to school and my choices are limited. Peanut butter is his favorite; he can eat it anytime of the day (his school is peanut-free) . I feel horrible that he has to go through this stuff. I've carried an EpiPen longer than I can remember and now he has the EpiJr. I have food & chemical allergies along with asthma. I breastfed for 14 months praying he would be spared guess that I should be thankful the allergies were at least somewhat delayed.
I'm guessing we're still in discovery mode. I think that heat exacerbates the eczema, DS's face is flared today and I can only blame it on the zoo trip or the hypoallergenic!!! sunblock.
A pediatric allergist is opening an office 10 min from where we live next month so I'm hoping to get in and have a RAST test. It'll be nice to have a specialist closer than the one we've visited.
Long post I but I know some of you understand!
Re: New Here!
welcome and sorry to hear about the allergies. looks like you're a pro though since you have them yourself and were prepared when he started reacting.
red dye seems to be a popular allergy and i heard that they are trying to get rid of it since it's unnecessary in foods. Hopefully that will be the case and he won't have to deal with that particular allergy.
