I know that TTC mostly never goes according to plan and I have this mindset in the beginning, but if you are a teacher, are/were trying to plan a baby's arrival around a specific part of the year? My school year runs from the beginning of August to the end of May and the idea of missing the beginning of school is something I'd like to avoid.
Re: teachers and trying to plan due dates
I'm a teacher and if TTC went according to my pakn my LO would be 2 months old. Alas, here I am TTC on cycle #14...
At this point, I could give 2 sh*ts when I miss in the school year...I want a baby. We had 2 teachers last year who missed the beginning of the school year (5th grade teachers) and their classes survived just fine...and so did they when they came back.
As a teacher I totally understand where you are coming from. I would love to get KU this cycle as it will allow me significant time to stay home without missing too much work. I also understand that I just need to let it happen and the type A in me has to go to the wayside. I really just want a little one no matter when.
All of this.
If (big if) IVF #1 works, I would be due just after the end of the school year, but I have NO problem being due in September if it takes a few tries.
Before I even started TTC I decided I wanted to give birth around November or March (lots of holidays, breaks= less sick days used.) Now, 11 cycles and two miscarriages later, I really do not care when I get my take home baby.
I know many teachers who have planned this out and it's worked for them but I will take it whenever. In theory it sounds great, but unrealistic.

25 Weeks - GOAL MET 52.2 Pounds gone! 27 Weeks Total Pounds Lost: 54.0
I'm just playing Devil's Advocate, but are you saying that being out on leave from say October to December or Jan to March would assure you coming back with no classroom mgt/control issues?
bfp 1 - m/c 1.31.11 @ 10 weeks
bfp 2 - baby born via c-section on 5.4.12 @ 37 weeks
bfp 3 - blighted ovum/d&c on 4.13.13 @ 8 weeks
bfp 4 - 3rd IUI, very late BFN with super low P, c/p
bfp 5 - natural bfp while on lupron, baby born via RCS on 4.27.15 @ 39 weeks
bfp 6 - surprise! baby born via RCS on 11.13.16 @ 38 weeks
No, there would still be classroom management issues if I were to have the same type of classes, but I just think that being there in the beginning of the year would help with establishing my expectations. I also think being there in the beginning of the year would give me time to set up routines and prepare the kids for the long-term sub and possibly my return.

I am in the process getting my ED degree. MH and I were supposed to start treatments next month, but have decided to wait a year, because we will only be two months in before we have to put it on hold, since I don't want to have a due date in the middle of my student teaching. (I'm not even sure how that would work...if I could do half, and then resume half after mat leave, or what).
It sucks to have to make that decision, but we will still try naturally until October, since I begin Student teaching next September. But you better believe we will jump into testing as soon as I begin student teaching!
I teach HS... and yes I am trying to plan my pregnancy with waiting to TTC. While I understand that it won't happen when I preferably want it to, I'm making sure I won't conceive until we're 100% ready.I teach AP History and hope to be due AFTER the exam in early May.
My maternity leave is 8 weeks paid (if I have it banked) plus an additional 4 weeks with FMLA unpaid (if it's not a medical necessity). I'm hoping to be due by the end of the next school year, end of May to mid-June, and not use of all my banked time. I wouldn't mind being due in July or August and then take the first half of the next year off.
My husband and I have also talked about possibility taking off a full semester (unpaid) and then going back in January. Since my job is safe for one year I'm starting to really like that idea but of course... we will see.
I think that comes down more to the type of sub you'll have and not what you do. If the sub doesn't reinforce/abide by the work you've done it won't matter when you take leave/come back.
Prior to getting my teaching position, I did several interim (long-term sub) jobs for teachers on maternity leave so I completely agree with this. In each, I worked hard to maintain consistency with procedures that the teacher had established with her students. Of course there were time I wouldn't have done things the same way if it had been my own classroom, but I tried to think how I would feel if someone were filling in for me while I was on leave. I've known interims, however, who didn't feel the same way and totally changed everything which made it difficult on the teachers when they came back.
I agree that there are ideal times to take off, but realize it doesn't always work that way. For instance, I'd love to have a due date right after state testing in early May and so that I could have the summer off with LO. However, I have absolutely no idea how long TTC will take. We are going to start trying next month and don't plan to TTA to skip due dates at the beginning of the year or anything.

With our first, we did ttc around the school year. We were about to tta because I would have missed the beginning of school, but we found out we were pregnant, so it worked out. I had 7 weeks with LO before inservice started.
With ttc #2, we are also working around the school year. If we don't get pregnant by October, we will tta until we either decide to start again or leave our family as 3.
I think that the beginning of the year is very important time not to miss. Yes, it is doable if you have the right sub, but that's not always the cast. It also varies on if you teach elem, ms, or hs. Also, the subject matter is important. I teach art, which contrary to popular belief is not as easy to teach as one might think and finding a sub that can do is not easy--let alone a long-term sub. I think that (imo) if you don't capture them in those first few weeks, then the rest of the year will be hard. If you come in and have no idea what has gone on for the first 6 weeks of school... again, just my opinion.
I am a college professor and back in school working on my doctorate, so I have two school years to try to plan around. I had DD in February and took off the spring semester. I had to teach extra classes the previous semester and "bank" them for spring. I guess you can't really do that when teaching K-12. This time, I have enough sick time to take off more than a semester, so I don't have to plan too much. But we still want to have a spring baby so I can take off the rest of the semester and summer. And my semester at school (where I'm getting my D.Ed.) ends in early April.
I actually just chatted with my dean about this last week, and he said, "You can't plan these things...they happen when they happen." So refreshing to hear from a superior, especially a male!
This, exactly. At this point, there is nothing that will stand between MH and I trying if we are together for my fertile window.
I would think you'd qualify for FMLA which gets you 12 weeks (unpaid)
EDD 1/5/13
This!
I agree - the kids will survive, and when a teacher comes back, things will fall back into place.
As a high school teacher, I think the same thing is true with the older kids. The world won't end if I'm gone at the beginning, middle or end of the year. I would not want to miss an opportunity, even if that meant I was pregnant at "the wrong time."
At least THIS. I do not think any job could require you to come back to work before your LO is at least 6 weeks old (who would watch them- since at least in my state, a child must be 6 weeks or older to enter child care- which I guess you could always have private care.)
My first two years teaching were in different districts, so I was the bottom of the ladder both years, and both years, I was moved to a different grade/school due to class size numbers. I had management issues both years. I know part of it was due to my inexperience and the makeup of the classes, but another part was the kids' attitudes of "our old teacher didn't make us do that.' I really don't want to go there again unless I have to.
We just started TTC, so who knows where we will be in Dec/Jan, but I may TTA being out at the beginning of the year, if I'm not too impatient yet.

I completely understand this. It's a whole different ball game when you're talking elementary or middle versus high, and especially with a "tougher" demographic. I was also hoping to time out baby #1 for an end-of-year due date. All we can do is try and hope for the best.
My school system also does not offer paid leave, and on top of that, they require you to use ALL accumulated leave prior to filing for short-term disability. (Which you also have to pay for.) So yeah, I'm hoping things work out for an early summer baby. However, if things don't work out that way, we definitely won't avoid or wait until next year.
I wouldn't worry too much about them thinking that you "lied". I had a friend who worked her first year and had a baby in January, and everything was just fine. As long as you do your job, there should be no problems!
I am one of the lucky ones who was able to conceive June and had DS in March. I came back for 3 weeks of the school year, and I will tell you that it was really nice. However, if I had tried for over a year, I would take the same point of view that now I don't care-- I just want a baby. The teacher next to me struggled to conceive, finally did after about 3 years, and she had her baby last September. I think her year was a little more difficult than mine was when I had DS, but she lived through it.
We are trying again to have a March/April baby, but again, it's out of my control.
My district is the same way with time off. I already purchased my disability insurance, but I have to use all of my sick before the policy begins. Plus, I am not eligible for FMLA. We are still undecided about TTA during Oct-Dec, but we are hoping to have an April, May, or June baby. GL to you.
