5k runners!!

What's your average time?

I am training for my first 5k, and I have 5 weeks left. I just did 3 miles in 37:45, but it was walking and running. Just wondering if I need to kick up my training even more or if I'm on a good pace.

Re: 5k runners!!

  • I would say to train according to schedule and don't overdo it. Do not worry about your pace vs someone else's pace. Everyone is different. Everyone has their own goals. People race for different reasons. Some people race to set a PR. Some people race for fun. Some people race for companionship in the running world. Your pace is exactly that, YOURS. Focus on your goal for the race. Sometimes my goal is just to finish. Sometimes it is to set a PR. Sometimes it is just to run with friends and have fun. Pick a goal for your race and meet that goal! The fun thing about running is you are competing with yourself and no one else (unless you are Kenyan and trying to set a record). Remember to have fun training and smile!!! You will finish stronger than you started!

That depends.  Is there a particular finishing time you're targeting?  My recommendation for your first 5K would be not to worry about the pace.  Try to find a pace that's consistent, comfortable, and sustainable for the entire 3.1.  If your goal is to run the entire thing, then do just that-- and don't worry about how quickly you run.  Once you havea time for your first race, you'll have a sense of what your current, comfortable 5K race pace is, and you'll know how much to push in training in order to improve upon it for future races.

I'm not sure what your current run/walk intervals are, but 37:45 sounds perfectly respectable for intervals.

My intervals are basically using the C25K program then running whatever is left of the 3 miles, which is about .5 mile. My main goal is to just run the whole thing.

  • That's pretty good! Personally, I run 5k's to finish. You may not be able to run the entire time, but just try your best. You might find motivation while running with other runners in the race and have a personal best time! I usually finish races between 30-35 min.

  • Sounds like a good start to me! In fact, I ran my first 5K in 37 mins.  I think for your first one, just aim to finish it and after that, you can start striving for improving your time.

This is great advice as 5k times can really range from 13 minutes and change (for elites) to an hour +.  Don't focus too much on times for your first one. Just finish comfortably and have a gauge for your next race.

  • Sounds like you're doing great for your first 5k! It's all about the experience your first time through.

My average time now (post baby and less time to work out) is 10 minute (ish) miles; so I usually finish between 30mins and 32 mins.

With 5 weeks of training left I'd just make sure not to push too hard that it A) give you an injury; or B) becomes a chore and not fun.

This is a PERFECT goal.  Don't worry about your time.  Time increases with practice - the more you run, the faster you will get.  For your first 5k, finishing is THE huge accomplishment and you should be proud of yourself no matter what time you get.

I agree.  It sounds as if physically you are ready, probably just need to work through any mental blocks.  I know my mind starts playing mind games as soon as I get over 2 miles.  I start thinking I can't do it, but then I just make little goals and talk myself through it.

    Good luck!
