dog/cat allergy?

DS is peanut and we had the scratch test and peanuts is the only one that he tested positive for.  But I don't remember if all the scratches were for just nuts.

DS keeps getting really puffy eyes when he goes to the IL's.  It was nothing he ate and he was fine outside, it just happened when we went inside where they have multiple dogs and cats.  Should I make an appt with the allergist to find out for sure?  He's never reacted to cats or dogs before but IL's house is not the cleanest when it comes to pets.

It just totally freaks out DH and I because any allergic reaction we're seconds away from an epi pen.  We gave him benedryl and he's ok.

Re: dog/cat allergy?

  • DD is allergic to both dogs and cats. We suspected so and a skin test confirmed it. We give her claritin before taking her anywhere that has dogs/cats (homes of all her g-parents, most friends, my sister...) and that usually helps. Without the claritin, she'll break out anywhere they touch her (or if she gets hair on herself and touches elsewhere on her body), a few times her eyes have swollen, and only once or twice did she start sounding wheezy.

I would want a confirmation from the allergist if it were me. Knowledge is power and they may have good preventative suggestions for you.

  • I agree with PP.  I would want a confirmation.  My daughter is extremely allergic to dogs.  It sucks because everyone in my family has dogs and she always has reactions when we go over (which is NOT often).
