Cloth Diapering

New to cloth diapers

I am about to take the plunge with cloth diapers. I am pretty sure I would like the pocket diapers. I heard the AIO's take longer to dry? How do you ladies feel about the one size diapers? My LO is 10 months old and I don't know what size diapers she would need.

How much have you spent on diapers or how much should I expect to spend?

Hi there! I am fairly new here too, as of the past few weeks. We just started our cloth diaper adventure 2 days ago.
There is a great FAQ page on the top of the board (right corner!) that helped me get a few basic questions answered right away.

From what I learned - depending on what type of cloth diaper you decide will work best - will also determine how much you are going to have to spend up front.

We chose the Flip system - its a cover with inserts. So we can reuse the cover a few times until it is either wet, or if she poops becomes stained. The inserts are fairly inexpensive (stay dry are $4.95 each), as are the covers ($13.95 - they also have some cover/insert package deals that reduce the cost a bit, and are on sale thru tomorrow) and because you arent changing your cover every time it helps keep costs down.

They are also a one size, which when DH and I were researching was important to us - we did not want to have to buy new diapers everytime she outgrew the current.

We purchased 6 covers and 24 inserts hoping that would get us through 2 days and then need to launder. Right now it seems to be working fine. With the package discounts and the flip sale going on, we spent about $160 on just the covers/inserts. We may look into getting some fuzzibunz or bum genius if/when her overnight needs change, but we havent had any leaks the past two nights using the flips so for now we are content with those. I liked the idea of FBs but the cost vs the flips was a lot greater (I think I factored close to $450 for 24 fuzzibunz)

With pockets you will be spending more as you will be changing the entire diaper with each change, same with all in ones obviously :)

You may also need new detergent if your current isn't cloth diaper safe. We went with Charlies, Rocking Green is another popular, and some here even use Tide but I dont know which one. there are also other ones out there - Im betting the FAQ has them listed!
We also had to get new rash cream as our old wasnt CD safe. but from what I understand you can add an insert when you need to use rash cream so you can use whatever and not ruin your diapers. (We chose to get Grandma El's and California baby to have on hand - hopefully one works when the day comes that we need it.)
Also factor in some wetbags for dirty diapers - we bought two pail liners and a pail - and my mom is going to whip up a diaper bag sized one for me i think!

Hopefully that helps a little! If you havent seen any in person to compare - that is what really helped us decide!

  • We use mostly one-size diapers and like them great. Your LO will probably fit a one-size diaper, but if you want to get her a sized diaper there is usually a weight or measurment range listed with the sizes.

We have all different kinds of diapers and our fitteds and AIOs take longer to dry than pockets or prefolds. If we need to use our dryer we have wool dryer balls that help cut down the dry time.

There is a wide range of what you can spend using cloth. It can be very economical using prefolds and PUL covers. If you have all pockets or even a hybrid system (such as best bottoms or flips) that will probably be an affordable stash as well. If you go WAHM fitteds and wool, now that will start to add up. GL on your research!

  • Yes, AIOs take longer to dry.

At 10 months your LO should fit OS diapers just fine.

Diapers can be addictive, so I probably spent way more than I could have. For pockets you're going to spend more than the cheap route of prefolds and covers. But you can always buy used and save some $.

    Have you considered a trial?

I just saw there are options to do that. I guess I still feel overwhelmed with all the options.
