How many prefold diapers are needed

How many prefold diapers would you recommend a new parent planning on using cloth diapers purchase before the arrival of a newborn?

  • If you want to wash every other day, around 30.

Check out the Cloth Diapering board, as well! They have an FAQ in the upper right.

  • I have 3 dozen and I thought that would be enough for two days. It's not for my little guy. It might depend on the baby. He gets fussy if it's just a tiny bit wet so maybe he goes through more than the average baby.

  • I have 24 of these orange edge without the closure and a few other random newborn AIO. I like these the best.  I wash every other day. I find these to be very absorbent. I only change LO before each feeding. (unless I know she has a dirty diaper in between) I have 4 covers and 3 snappis.

  • My mother got us a month of diaper service as a gift, and they started us with 70 diapers.

They pick up once a week (tomorrow night will be our first pickup) and we will run out just in time. So think about 80 for a full week- divide it depending on how many days you want between washes.

Our service gave us 80 a week and it has not been enough for us (luckily we have 2 dozen prefolds of our own that we wash and use). I would say 70-100 a week would be good for most families- our LO just eliminates more than average.

If we were to buy our own, I'd probably want 40-50 so we wouldn't *have* to do diaper laundry super often. We're already doing laundry daily with the non-service prefolds, our cloth wipes (I thought 100 would be plenty, it's not), and LO's and our clothes.
