Age for understanding left and right?

I was thinking this was about a 4 year old concept, but I think I might be wrong. Anyone know?

Re: Age for understanding left and right?

  • I'm not sure, but whenever I tell him to give me his right/left hand, right/left foot, turn right, turn left, etc. etc. he always does. Maybe it's just coincidence, but we have been working with him on this for quite some time now.

  • They work on it a lot here in Kindergarten.  Very few kids know it before then, just from what I see in the classrooms.
  • I remember learning it when I started playing piano at 4...but I had a really hard time with it for awhile.
  • DD knows left & right most of the time.  Sometimes she biffs it, but if we ask for her left foot, she offers up the correct one about 90% of the time.
  • My DS will say left and right and knows that they are some kinda direction (he will be 2 1/2 in january) but its usually a coincedence if he points or goes in the direction he is saying.  I was gonna guess 4 yrs to kindergarten range but wasn't sure.
  • DS is learning this now and he just turned 3. He gets it right most of the time but somehow forgets every now and then
