Pregnant after a Loss

Why are all the high chairs so ugly?

What did you register for? They're all so squishy and padded, I imagine it's a nightmare to clean between the crevices and folds in the fabric. I originally registered for this one:

image...which I didn't love but it's okay (DH LOVES orange). But my mom said that after 3 kids the thing she loved most was one with wheels, it helped with clean up, etc. So I'm trying in vain to find a wheelie one that isn't big, padded and obnoxious looking-they all look like a car seat on big thick white tubes.

I don't really want any of them in my kitchen, even the pricey ones are weird looking, IMO. WDYT? I know this is a super minor thing to worry about and I am glad I have the opportunity to worry about something so trivial!

My life has a superb cast but I can't figure out the plot.
  • They are all hideous!  I originally registered for a wooden one as it fit our style better and took up the least amount of floor space.  Then, I tried to remove the tray in the store and after fighting it for several minutes, I removed it from my registry.  This is the original one I registered for, I think.

Then, based on the recommendation of the sales guy (who was my height and had a two year old), we changed it to this one.  It's bigger, but it rolls, the seat adjusts to seven heights (so you can easily feed standing or sitting), it tilts (so you can put them in there earlier for bottle feeding or heck, if they fall asleep in it, they can nap), it's easy to remove the tray, easy to clean and a heck of a lot more functional than the original one we wanted.

We also don't have a lot of space, and we do a lot of outdoor dining and camping, so I am thinking that this might be the way to go for us.  My mom had one for me and said that it was brilliant.

It's cute and it folds up nicely. It's tucked up against the wall right now and barely takes up any room that way.

  • We registered for this one (Graco Blossom in Capri).

Graco Blossom 4-in-1 High Chair Seating System - Capri - Graco - Babies"R"Us

It didn't blow me away though.  None of them did.  The reason we went with this one is that we will be trying for a second kid soon after the first and this chair can be used by multiple kids at once (it comes apart and can be a booster seat and chair with tray at the same time).  I'd have gone with the strap ons to a chair or the table if the current kitchen set we have was conducive to that.

  • UGH! Highchairs are a nightmare to clean IMO. I used to spray DD's off with the garden hose every so often. haha.

I would definatly get one that you can get the top off of easy.

This time around im going with one that snaps into a kitchen chair...i wonder if i will like it better....

  • Call me crazy, but I've deceided to go bare bones with the FP Health Care Deluxe Booster seat.

Fisher-Price Healthy Care Deluxe Booster Seat

A friend of mine has one for travel, etc, it's lasted through 2 boy, and she still loves it. If we need something more deluxe we'll look for something else once baby's ready to use it full time.

  • Thank you all for the ideas and input! I think the little ones that clip on the table are a great idea and something we might do instead. We have a medium sized kitchen and an extra chair at the table so that should work perfectly and be cheaper. I have so many high-ticket items on my registry I'd love to have something less expensive. My shower guests are going to think I'm a brat!

  • We have a Chicco Polly.  If I had all the money in the world, I would have bought a Stokke Tripp Trapp.  Also, when we registered for DD, some of the cooler high chairs like the Boon Flair weren't available.

I think the wooden ones are nice but they usually get pretty crappy reviews, so that's why we went with the Polly.  We have a Fisher Price Healthy Care booster for DD, and I really love it and might just buy another one for the baby to save space.

This is the one we registered for:

    image

It's the Graco Contempo Rittenhouse (I believe).  I picked it because it's not as expensive as some of the other ones, it seemed to get good reviews, & it wasn't *as* hideous as some of the other less expensive ones.  We didn't get it, so now I'm second-guessing things & may go for one of those chair-top smaller models.

If money wasn't an object, this is the high chair that made me drool:

    image

It's by Stokke & they do have cushioned inserts, but I can't help but think that it doesn't look too comfortable.  But it sure is pretty.  :)

GL finding something functional & fashionable!  (And, if you do, please PIP & let us know!)

ETA:  Just reread & saw that you wanted something with wheels.  Whoops!  Well, since I've already showed you a bunch of non-wheeled models, here's another super expensive pretty one without wheels:

    image

It's by Svan.  Also has optional padding (which, of course, you have to pay for & order separately.)  :)

  • We got the Peg Perego Prima Pappa in Cacao. It reclines, folds, adjusts in height, and is leather, so it wipes clean.

  • My cousin got something similar to the Stokke for her boys (maybe it is that brand, who knows).  They are still using them (youngest is 5) as booster seats.  She loooves them, especially how they've grown with the boys through the years.  They've held up well to two energetic young boys as well.

I have nothing useful to add, other than I appreciate this thread and everyone's input. Most high chairs really are ugly. In fact, a lot of baby furniture in general is so, so ugly and huge!

We have a very small house (small as in 500 sq feet) so everything must have at least two purposes or it just doesn't get to come in the door. Plus, we have a modern/mid century/danish sort of style, and all these huge sleigh beds and crazy ornate cuckoo stuff make me want to go in business to make practical, affordable, and nicely designed baby stuff. Everything that has a relatively modern design seems to cost a hundred billion dollars - and I have five dollars, so...

We also registered for the Graco Contempo except in the Deco pattern, which is last year's pattern and has since been discontinued and put on clearance.

We picked it because we actually liked the pattern and it folds up nicely for our limited space. We are also lucky enough, someone purchased it off of our registry this weekend!

  • We had a Fisher Price Rainforest one with DS the first time around, thing was hideous and took up a ton of room in the kitchen - and despite the wheels, it was a total PITA to clean up and around (I disagree with your mom, actually, the wheels do nothing for me).

This time we're going with the Stokke wooden one.  It's pricey, fo sho, but all my friends who have had it love it.  I really like that it can pull up to the table and also be used when the baby gets bigger as a booster or extra chair (which we always need anyway).  The padded inserts really do make a difference, and despite looking totally impractical, it really is a great high chair.
