Trying to Get Pregnant

teachers and trying to plan due dates

I know that TTC mostly never goes according to plan and I have this mindset in the beginning, but if you are a teacher, are/were trying to plan a baby's arrival around a specific part of the year? My school year runs from the beginning of August to the end of May and the idea of missing the beginning of school is something I'd like to avoid.

Re: teachers and trying to plan due dates

  • I'm a teacher and if TTC went according to my pakn my LO would be 2 months old.  Alas, here I am TTC on cycle #14...

At this point, I could give 2 sh*ts when I miss in the school year...I want a baby.  We had 2 teachers last year who missed the beginning of the school year (5th grade teachers) and their classes survived just fine...and so did they when they came back.

  • After 18 months of ttc, I am not avoiding for anything. But if you want to avoid a July/Aug/Sept baby, then avoid Oct-Dec (or around there).

  • As a teacher I totally understand where you are coming from.  I would love to get KU this cycle as it will allow me significant time to stay home without missing too much work.  I also understand that I just need to let it happen and the type A in me has to go to the wayside.  I really just want a little one no matter when.

    All of this.

If (big if) IVF #1 works, I would be due just after the end of the school year, but I have NO problem being due in September if it takes a few tries.

  •    Before I even started TTC I decided I wanted to give birth around November or March (lots of holidays, breaks= less sick days used.)  Now, 11 cycles and two miscarriages later, I really do not care when I get my take home baby.

I know many teachers who have planned this out and it's worked for them but I will take it whenever.  In theory it sounds great, but unrealistic.

  • We honestly got really lucky with our timing.  We had been trying for 11 cycles so anything worked for us at that point and I was going to cross that bridge when I got there as far as working for part of the year.  I got pregnant in my September cycle, my due date was  June 8th (the day before school got out), I went into labor 2 hours after school ended (9th), and BB was born the afternoon of the 10th.  I ended up missing my two days of post-planning.  If I could choose to do that again, I would but it's totally out of my hands.

  • I do plan on avoiding Oct-Dec, but I haven't even started my first cycle yet, so things may change. This year will only be my second year teaching and I struggled with classroom management, especially in my low-performing tutorial classes. I had 9 students expelled (drugs, fights, weapons, tagging) and was sexually harrassed two times. I just can't imagine coming into school after missing the beginning and maintaining control.

  • I would love to get pregnant either this cycle or the next couple so that my baby would be due close to school ending. I know that it probably won't happen but I'm not going to be overly worried if I miss out on the beginning of the school year. I'm a sped teacher so it would be easy for my class to start out on the right foot with the help of the para's in my classroom.

  • Yes... I agree with what everyone else wrote too.  I had that plan when we first started TTC and it would be wonderful if we could get KU this summer.  But, I am five cycles in and no baby... so I again, agree with what everyone else said.  Whenever I get pregnant, we will deal with work and everything else.  A good friend of mine had her baby the day school started and several of my friends have had kids throughout the year.  Missing the beginning is definitely hard, but she got through it and we all will no matter when we are due!  So, I am just trying to focus on getting our finances in order, working out and being as prepared for the joyous occassion whenever it happens!  GL to us all!!

  • I am also a sped teacher. Since I will have my kiddos year after year, I do not think missing any part of the year will be too difficult for them. They are a great group of kiddos and they have wonderful parents. I would love to have some overlap with my sub however, esp. if any major meetings will be occurring. I know we will all be happy whenever we get our take home babies :)

  • We started out TTC with that mindset but with a year of trying behind me and only a m/c to show for it I am now of the "I'll take my baby any month of the year"- camp. My school and future students will survive without me. That's the job of my supervisors to ensure.

No, there would still be classroom management issues if I were to have the same type of classes, but I just think that being there in the beginning of the year would help with establishing my expectations. I also think being there in the beginning of the year would give me time to set up routines and prepare the kids for the long-term sub and possibly my return.

  • I have my ed degree, but have subbed and now stay home with DS. This past year I started the year off for a teacher who was on short term disability leave and overall it went really really well. She was on workman's comp, so we weren't allowed to communicate often, and when we did it was very brief. Coming from the long term sub's side of things, as long as you've got a sub who can hit the ground running and other grade level teachers who can help guide your sub a bit, everything will work out fine :0)

  • I totally understand the classroom management issues. I think setting the tone of the class is important in the beginning of the year. But I figure when *I* walk into the room after my phantom maternity leave it WILL BE like the beginning of the year. The students will be informed on the way I run my class and those who don't abide by my rules will have to deal with consequences. Call parents, set rules and stick to then, set the tone however you need to and do what you would normally do at the beginning of the year.

  • I am in the process getting my ED degree. MH and I were supposed to start treatments next month, but have decided to wait a year, because we will only be two months in before we have to put it on hold, since I don't want to have a due date in the middle of my student teaching. (I'm not even sure how that would work...if I could do half, and then resume half after mat leave, or what).

It sucks to have to make that decision, but we will still try naturally until October, since I begin Student teaching next September. But you better believe we will jump into testing as soon as I begin student teaching!

  • I teach HS... and yes I am trying to plan my pregnancy with waiting to TTC. While I understand that it won't happen when I preferably want it to, I'm making sure I won't conceive until we're 100% ready.I teach AP History and hope to be due AFTER the exam in early May.

My maternity leave is 8 weeks paid (if I have it banked) plus an additional 4 weeks with FMLA unpaid (if it's not a medical necessity). I'm hoping to be due by the end of the next school year, end of May to mid-June, and not use of all my banked time. I wouldn't mind being due in July or August and then take the first half of the next year off.

My husband and I have also talked about possibility taking off a full semester (unpaid) and then going back in January. Since my job is safe for one year I'm starting to really like that idea but of course... we will see.

  • DH is actually a teacher so we're hoping that Baby #2 will be due in July or August next year. DD was born in August so he was able be home for 3 weeks before he had to go back to work.. it definitely worked out well because he was able to spend some time with her and get used to the sleep deprivation!

I think that comes down more to the type of sub you'll have and not what you do.  If the sub doesn't reinforce/abide by the work you've done it won't matter when you take leave/come back.

Prior to getting my teaching position, I did several interim (long-term sub) jobs for teachers on maternity leave so I completely agree with this. In each, I worked hard to maintain consistency with procedures that the teacher had established with her students. Of course there were time I wouldn't have done things the same way if it had been my own classroom, but I tried to think how I would feel if someone were filling in for me while I was on leave. I've known interims, however, who didn't feel the same way and totally changed everything which made it difficult on the teachers when they came back.

  • I agree that there are ideal times to take off, but realize it doesn't always work that way. For instance, I'd love to have a due date right after state testing in early May and so that I could have the summer off with LO. However, I have absolutely no idea how long TTC will take. We are going to start trying next month and don't plan to TTA to skip due dates at the beginning of the year or anything.

  • With our first, we did ttc around the school year.  We were about to tta because I would have missed the beginning of school, but we found out we were pregnant, so it worked out.  I had 7 weeks with LO before inservice started.

With ttc #2, we are also working around the school year.  If we don't get pregnant by October, we will tta until we either decide to start again or leave our family as 3.

I think that the beginning of the year is very important time not to miss.  Yes, it is doable if you have the right sub, but that's not always the cast.  It also varies on if you teach elem, ms, or hs.  Also, the subject matter is important.  I teach art, which contrary to popular belief is not as easy to teach as one might think and finding a sub that can do is not easy--let alone a long-term sub.  I think that (imo) if you don't capture them in those first few weeks, then the rest of the year will be hard.  If you come in and have no idea what has gone on for the first 6 weeks of school...  again, just my opinion.

  • I am a college professor and back in school working on my doctorate, so I have two school years to try to plan around.  I had DD in February and took off the spring semester.  I had to teach extra classes the previous semester and "bank" them for spring.  I guess you can't really do that when teaching K-12.  This time, I have enough sick time to take off more than a semester, so I don't have to plan too much.  But we still want to have a spring baby so I can take off the rest of the semester and summer.  And my semester at school (where I'm getting my D.Ed.) ends in early April.

I actually just chatted with my dean about this last week, and he said, "You can't plan these things...they happen when they happen."  So refreshing to hear from a superior, especially a male!

  • My contract gives me time off, up to the rest of the school year, from whenever I have my baby (unpaid). However, if the baby is born in the summer then I am pretty sure I get no time off (at least, based on the language in my contract). So theoretically, if I have my baby in August I could have three weeks with my child before school starts, but if I can manage to get September, then I could take as much time as I wanted until the following August. We're hoping for a March, April or May baby so I can at least get some time off without totally throwing off my students or my income. We may stop trying for a couple months to avoid a summer baby, because I really want some uninterrupted time at home in the beginning - it's a tough choice to make though

I agree - the kids will survive, and when a teacher comes back, things will fall back into place.

As a high school teacher, I think the same thing is true with the older kids.  The world won't end if I'm gone at the beginning, middle or end of the year.  I would not want to miss an opportunity, even if that meant I was pregnant at "the wrong time."

At least THIS.  I do not think any job could require you to come back to work before your LO is at least 6 weeks old (who would watch them- since at least in my state, a child must be 6 weeks or older to enter child care- which I guess you could always have private care.)

  • My first two years teaching were in different districts, so I was the bottom of the ladder both years, and both years, I was moved to a different grade/school due to class size numbers. I had management issues both years. I know part of it was due to my inexperience and the makeup of the classes, but another part was the kids' attitudes of "our old teacher didn't make us do that.' I really don't want to go there again unless I have to.

We just started TTC, so who knows where we will be in Dec/Jan, but I may TTA being out at the beginning of the year, if I'm not too impatient yet.

My school system also does not offer paid leave, and on top of that, they require you to use ALL accumulated leave prior to filing for short-term disability. (Which you also have to pay for.) So yeah, I'm hoping things work out for an early summer baby. However, if things don't work out that way, we definitely won't avoid or wait until next year.

I wouldn't worry too much about them thinking that you "lied".  I had a friend who worked her first year and had a baby in January, and everything was just fine.  As long as you do your job, there should be no problems! :)

I am one of the lucky ones who was able to conceive June and had DS in March.  I came back for 3 weeks of the school year, and I will tell you that it was really nice.  However, if I had tried for over a year, I would take the same point of view that now I don't care-- I just want a baby.  The teacher next to me struggled to conceive, finally did after about 3 years, and she had her baby last September.  I think her year was a little more difficult than mine was when I had DS, but she lived through it.

We are trying again to have a March/April baby, but again, it's out of my control.

  • Thanks for the FMLA. I will look into that, didn't think of it. I guess they probably didn't write it in the contract since it is sort of its own thing. I know my school is going to have major cuts the year after next (so the year I would be missing part of with a summer baby) and although it would be illegal I would still be paranoid that they would want to just not fill my position or be difficult about it. Being without tenure makes it more stressful because with the way budgets are, it isn't a performance issue alone that can get you let go - it can just be numbers/budgets/whatever they feel is best.
